truly great vibes in this cosy little place. indeed, lots of friendly people drinking and skanking away. the sound wasn't too good, but IK... and the fact there was no mic to even introduce the fact there was two DJs playing back to back was a real shame.. all the reggae was great, good to hear some dancehall from gordy early on. but the soul selection didn't really impress me. and it's not cause i don't like soul.
my highlight was obviously the studio one clash between jack johnson aka DJ Perilous and Gordy. Although C.D. who was keeping track of the crowd's response had to leave half way through. i reckon it ended as a draw. Gordy got the first major forwards of the evening with a more dancefloor orientated selection, including a shocking Mittoo version on "summertime". When jack was 2 - nil down he brought down his hackney empire classics, like the Jazzbo version of Spear of door peeper (imperial I) or his lover's murder "let's make love" by the dynamic four and got back on par at 2-2. Gordon's came up 6-5 in the final round but the last ska played by jack really mashed it so can't really hail a winner. Overlall, jack's selection was probably deeper and would have scored higher on a bigger sound / session, but Gordon's really hit the saturday night party people with serious gems, and one and all really enjoyed this part of the night, altough some had already left. Top Guests should be a prime time, not closing time!!
overall, great place and vibes and TURNOUT for a web-based promotion was amazing. good to meet peeps and devirtualise, I did more socialising in one eve than in the last 6 months...
respect Baldhead Selector to the fullest; for throwing this and playing us some (but not enough) killer Roots and Culture.
Bless....

The best tune played all night was also the final tune: The Skatalites' 'Ska Ba', a big man's music!

That's a bit exciting Bedward - what's the tune - Stevie Winwood on organ, or a Stax number?

That's a bit exciting Bedward - what's the tune - Stevie Winwood on organ, or a Stax number? ...It's Jackie Mittoo doing a version of "Hang 'em High", Rob - which owes more to the Booker T. & the M.G.s version than the original film soundtrack - no surprise there! Most recently available on Soul Jazz "Studio One Funk" SJRCD97.. Me? I had a great time - and it was smashing to put some faces to the names of folk I've happened across here, at Pama, on Gordon's board and previously on BAF - better than good to meet all of you (in no particular order): ...and finally - Baldhead Selector and the lovely Anita - cheers for letting me play, my friend - I thoroughly enjoyed it and most tunes seemed to keep the crowd moving - I didn't play a quarter of what I had lined up, though !!! In my book, a real shame several notables couldn't make it - Dave Home, Ekki, Big Five and downbeat to name a few who might have been there under other circumstances!!! I'm sure I've missed a few, but I'll add them as I remember. After dropping Gordon and Stephen off in Tooting, I finally got in just after 4:30 a.m. :?

What a great night! Multiple thanks going to John Baldy for organising it all. It was a nice venue and a great atmosphere, everyone chatting drinking and dancing. It was lovely to meet up with so many friendly folk from here and to raise a few quid for Alpha at the same time. Well done to all the selectors too for keeping it funky and varied all night, and the Studio 1 clash at the end was a classic! Gordy took some great photos and we also got another t-shirt moment, with Gordy, CD and Port a Jam all wearing the same Studio 1 shirts but in different colours which hopefully Gordy will put up here soon.... Anyways, I just wanted to say I enjoyed myself immensely (as I was already mashed before arriving after watching Hereford win promotion!) and I couldn't have wished for a better party in which to celebrate...

Here's what I wrote at the other place (sorry if you've already perused it there):
Yes, another superb night, even better than last year's. I can see this is going to become an annual "clear the diary" social event of the year. Many thanks and huge appreciation to John (Baldy) and everyone who lent him a hand getting the event up and running and I hope the Alpha Boys will benefit. Big up also Stephen for handing me a CD of Gordy's set; I fear I may not have been sufficiently effusive (or audible) in my thanks. Afraid my critical faculties had been effectively anaesthetised by the Lark's generous licensing extension by the time of the clash (if indeed I was still there) so can't really engage with Augui's assessment thereof. But there was some cracking music early on when I was taxing rarely used muscles and joints on the dancefloor. But the joy of the event is social and it was great to meet some incredibly nice people for the first time: Bedward, Stephen, Crazy Downbeat, Daniella, Anita, Yvonne, Jean-Paul as well as to re-encounter friends from the last year: Hugh, Penny, Mikey, Ian, Gordon, Joe, Ringo and, of course, Baldy himself. A really friendly vibe and reassuring to see that the slightly masculine bias of the message boards was not replicated at the event and that the women were as numerous as the men. We talk about it; they dance to it. Sorry if I've inadvertently omitted anyone I met in the rollcall above but I can only agree wholeheartedly with Ringo's comment as reported by Stephen. A genuinely heartwarming and enjoyable event. So big up yourself, Baldy.

Great pics bedward, you certainly captured the vibe of the night. One thing worries me though..................... the words foot fetish spring to mind Seriously though a great night - put faces to handles/names and some great music (although we did dip out early and missed the S1 clash), which by all accounts was great. Did anyone record it?

Thanks everyone for a good night, sorry I dissapeared a little early, it was past Yvon's bedtime... I missed the s1 clash, a pity, but there yah go.
Great to meet many I hadn't yet, and brilliant to see a few again, particularly nice to see Grumpy and chat to Rob Moore for a bit. Also particularly nice to see Augui and C.D. for the first time (kind of in Augui's case as we'd met once at T up )..

"Oh what a night - what a night , What a Saturday night!" ;D Don't know where to begin, Hayley and I had a great time, it was great meeting you guys. The defining moment for me was Gordy's eighties dancehall selection, though all the selectors were excellent. I will type some more later probably but my head hurts too much at the moment. C.D

Gordy - Can you post the tracklisting for your 2 CD-set I kindly received from Stephen? Musicwise the dancehall tracks and the Spear Door Peeper were my favourites

A full Mash report will follow when I get it together but in the meantime this picture (from among the many kindly taken and posted up by Bedward) sums it up for me: Many thanks again BIG respects Baldy

I don´t know were to start...it was such a great evening and I have hardly to think about were I felt the last time as welcomed as on Saturday. It won´t be the last time for me to come. It´s completely unimportant how long I have to travel. Every step is worthwile if you have the chance to meet as nice people. So my thanks goes firstly to John Baldy for making it possible (btw I visited the V&A.…it´s a most impressing exhibition), thanks to Joe for everything, music your kindness and caring thoughts, you own a place in my heart, thanks to Paul and Kev, the Trini-boy, for the drinks the chat and catching the drops, thanks to Gordon (hopefully the air condition is working the next time), Jack Johnson, Baldy, Joe and Ken for your sets, thanks to Augui for the records, thanks to Steve, Rob, Tony, Stephen, Conciouspilot, grumpy and everyone I have talked to and forget now, because there were so many new faces for me. I haven´t dance only ones because I was to busy in chatting. That´s the power of music: to connect so many lovely people. It was a great pleasure to join. Only one downer for me: received a mail from the booking agency that credit cards from two of the guests who stayed in the same hotel like me during the same period, have been charged important amounts of money after they left the hotel. So hopefully they haven´t robbed the card of my partner, who made the transaction for me, can´t check this in the moment.
