For me it would have to be the following: 1. Those who would always be starting those "Old vs. New" type threads over at that other board.
What's the point? What's old? What's new? Is it the entire history of Jamaican music up until six months ago versus everything since?? Seems to be, to some of the bashment fans. And still .... the new manages to win! Give me a break. 2. Those with extreme cases of format prejudice baffle me 
You know the ones who love sevens but wouldn't have a twelve in the house. Or those who would never buy a CD of an album that hadn't received a vinyl issue or vice versa! If you buy only vinyl you miss nuff great music, exactly the same applies to the CD crowd. 3. Ok, the last category are not that annoying but .... on a similar vein and IMO, much much more ludicrous - those who who never buy a re-issue! If you don't own it and it's great, you NEED it, so buy it!!! |

Alll of the people that I've met in person with the best taste in music spend more of their energy and money on tracking down songs and not on trying to present a particular style of dress. that is my point as well..in most cases..the more the "dress and act" the part..the less they generally know about the music..
I remember going to one of those revolutionary cafe's in berkeley when i was a student..you know ..the kind that have pictures of Che' all over the place..well I got to talking to a few of those people..and they had their Che' t-shirts on..etc..it turned out..they had never actually read Che's book or even the diaries of him in the Bolivian jungle..(i had read them as part of a class)..needless to say..the more one acts and dresses the part..the more I am suspicious

Amen to what Gordon, richeratmosphere and angelgabriel said. Some people just gravitate towards a "lifestyle," because they can't seem to come up with one of their own. It takes originality and a brain to seek out and understand music for yourself. Doing everything under the pretext and within the framework of some watered-down sub-cultural group is pathetic. I've had the exact Che t-shirt experience too, though I must admit, it was a very beautiful girl...

I've always thought that music and lifestyle can be separated.
This goes back to high school when I loved punk, yet was quite content in my middle class neighbourhood. In fact, we used to sneer at the kids who dressed as punk fans - like they were at a costume party. It's been that way forever - goths, metal heads, punks, white rastas etc.
As I got older, it's more a source of amusement rather than annoyance. Seeing all these punk kids dressed up like it's still 1979...

Those who jump on the bandwagon (as it passes), buy a couple of Marley albums and profess to either a) be experts or b) devoted fans - you know the sort. ...probably the same folk who have dinner parties and listen to (IMVHO) "poncey tat" like James Blunt, Kate Melua, Norah Jones, Diane Krull etc.  ...and as soon as the next bandwagon approaches, they're gone... |

Putting on clothes or listening to a certain band is like puuting on an identity - it's why they get so angry if you 'diss' their band - as though you were personally insulting them. At the beginning of each academic year - she counts the number of cowboy hats in the class and works out a percentage which indicates to her whether or not it will be a bad year. Respect Baldy |

Out here in Northern Colorado we got all kinds. Cowboys, punks, trustafarians. It's always fun to roll into town on a Saturday nite. You never know what'll happen. I met a dreadlocked white guy in a local record store
and I was wearing a Lion of Judah T-shirt. We started talking and he invited me to hear his sound; playing at an Irish Pub type joint. I went to hear it and he was playing the screechiest, offkey singjay stuff to a bunch of other white trustafarians. Even my girlfriend who puts up with my non stop reggae around the house asked, "where's the Bass?" We had a quick drink and then headed for the hills.
It takes all kinds I guess...
