Those who jump on the bandwagon (as it passes), buy a couple of Marley albums and profess to either a) be experts or b) devoted fans - you know the sort. Yeah about a month ago I was in a cab with a knob of a driver. He was playing Legend and telling me he had every song Bob ever recorded. I have been carrying round a cd in my bag ever since with Go Jimmy Go, Judge Not and a couple of others on there to see if he is able to singalong.................but I've not seen him since.

I didn't know that Roger Steffens was moonlighting as a Welsh cabbie.

That's right, he said "I once had that Cheyenne in the back of my cab and he refused to talk about anything unless there was a reggae connection although he did seem to quite like Simply Red for some reason"

Okay, who posted our addy over at SNWMF? And I'm willing to bet that around 50% of the young 20 something white kids shouting Jah Rastafari that night don't know who Haile Selassie I is, don't know about Marcus Garvey and can't even name a single place in Ethiopia. Respect Gordy

Sorry to offend the righteous thinking of His Imperial ten star Moderator. I had been warned...
Some children go to church with their parents. Most of them eventually drop out, other become religious.
The same applies to youth with music and identity. You have to start somewhere...
How can it be cursed to unite, or try to, with the philosophy, roots and culture of musicians playing in front of you?
do you actually listen to sounds of roots, unity, tolerance and culture over here? or is it just dissing that you do?

That's where you're wrong though.
I own several books on Black history and culture, I know a bit, not lots but more than a lot of these kids.
I shall take several photographs of myself holding up said books to prove it when I get home too.
But your starter for ten is that Garvey operated the Black Star Line in order to repatriate black people back to Africa but ended up ripping off hundreds of people in the process and he was a bit of a twat really according to some accounts.

By the way, amongst my favourite artists are Burning Spear, Culture, Mighty Diamonds, The Abyssinians and The Gladiators. Last time I checked they never sang about bling bling or shaking your booty........

Nice one.
And kudos to Gaordy for not responding to the line "by looking at you i would be willing to bet you dont know squat about garvey or ethiopia either."
What's a person's appearance got to do with their knowledge?
Some of the smartest people I know look like complete slobs - unshaven, soup-stained clothes, glassy eyes... oh wait, that's me.
Off to the shower it is.

i didnt say you didnt know squat; i said by YOUR LOOKS one wouldnt think you know squat. "jamaica recording" t shirts notwithstanding. that was your point back there wasnt it? so i was agreeing with you.
and as for your little math exercise above, woo hoo run for president or something. how many people pipe up for something doesnt mean crap. now tell us how many people buy britney spears vs how many people buy reggae? by your account then i guess reggae just sucks?
>Burning Spear, Culture, Mighty Diamonds, The Abyssinians and The Gladiators. Last time I >checked they never sang about bling bling or shaking your booty........
that is such a lame statement. speaking of which:
>ended up ripping off hundreds of people in the process
then you believe what has been discovered to be a hatchet job by the fbi to discredit him and stop him from causing black people to get "uppity"? do you believe everything the government tells you? i dont.
i dont think he ever "ripped off" anyone. he got harrassed and i think deported for mail fraud but that was in the eye of the beholder if you ask me. anyway im not really prepared to get into a discussion of history and ones view of it but i think youve rather simplified the situation.
