I just put a friends wife up here on Saturday night, they live in the South of France now, but she's over to do a few things. we had a good evening and I played her loads of tunes, we drank copious ammounts of Red vino..
She used to dance professionally all over the world, and was telling me about going out on the Raz with of all people, Boney M., somehwere in north Africa or the Middle East ( I can't remember now) she then went on to tell me that she had got on particularly well with a Jamaican guy who played the Trumpet in the band and was called Tan Tan, and that they'd dated for a while.
I tried to confirm my suspicions, but it wasn't until I mentioned Georgie Fame that she said yeah (or should that be Yeah Yeah?) and that this was one of the Bands he'd mentioned he had played in, and we realised that we were talking about the same Tan Tan.
Jamaican music links... weird...

Funny little story. Didn't Boney M have their share of mysterious Jamaican connections otherwise too? I seem to remember one of the ladies in the band was jamaican originally - hence "Rivers of Babylon" and "Brown Girl In the Ring" in their repertoire. And there was an interview with Bunny Brown of the Chosen Few in a recent Natty Dread magazine where he told stories of their job as Boney M's backing band. They used to play - and sing - on their records an their gigs. In concerts, the Chosen Few singers would sing behind the curtain to maintain the illusion that Boney M could actually sing...

...Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton was a regular member of No. 1 Station until just a few months ago.
Marcus (from No. 1 Station) told me recently that Tan Tan now plays with Ska Cubana.

Liz Mitchell was the Jamaican woman in Boney M, she sang lead on 'Rivers Of Babylon' and her folks lived in Harlesden. In 1978, I interviewed the group and briefly fell in love with her.
Tan Tan is a whore, he's played in hundreds of band for more than 40 years. Last time I saw him was blowing with Freetown about a year ago.

Tan Tan played in so many bands thru the years that it's hard to keep count, but i'd be really surprised if he made so much money with The Cosmics, Rico's band and even Jazz Jamaica! music is his occupation isn't it ? So, no big deal! the middle eastern country bmd was refering to probably was Lebanon. Sylvia Tella also was in a later incarnation of Boney M.
