I realized recently that I've got too much music, if such a thing is possible.. In a vague attempt to justify having so many, I've been asking friends to choose my days listening: so far today I've had (all albums): Conscious Man - The Jolly Brothers Release The Pressure - Centry Light Up Your Spliff - Bush Chemists (It was near Centry!) Brutal Out Deh - The Itals Currently listening to a Digital Mystikz collection from a mate And coming up I've got: The Ella Fitagerald Songbook pt. 3 New Dubby Conquerers - Seeed And another mate is coming round in half an hour who I'll get to choose a few more The question is: How many of your tunes do you actually regularily listen to? And how do you justify having so many tunes? ;D Simeon

I really try to listen to everything I get pretty carefully. Every so often something slips through the cracks, but I try to keep it in mind to listen to such things in the future. Buying music, in a lot of cases, really is an addiction...it feels good, just like someone who sits and eats a whole box of chocolate or something. It's pretty silly, though, to collect music just for having it. I'd like to think that a friend could take some selection of mine, play it, and I would be able to identify it within a few seconds. I think this is a good test. I mean, a music fan might have a lot of music, but is it really the same if they can't identify it? I think that would put such a person into the realm of collector....somebody who enjoys the act of collecting and having these physical things, even if they can't listen to them all, or get to know them all at least a little bit.
On one hand, I like to have some fresh music around that I'm not all that familiar with, one reason being that I learn music very quickly, so it gets older faster. I'm very good at memorizing sounds, and it's a nightmare, because things play over in my head...whole songs, and I get sick of them just from that!
I'm going off on a tangent, though. When I get a little far ahead in my music buying, I try to force myself to stop (I'll give myself a few exceptions in advance, that I'll allow myself to buy) and really take an inventory of what I haven't listened to enough, or at all, that I already have. I've been amazed at times how much I'm just sitting on that I'm not appreciating.
SO, what I'd do is go through the old collection, find the stuff that you've hardly listened to, or haven't listened to at all, and put it together in its own place. Proceed to listen exclusively from this pile until: 1. You've enjoyed and familiarized yourself with the music. 2. You've determined that you don't like it or need it (in which case you should sell it or give it away).
I sometimes miss being a kid and listening to the same thing over, and over, and over. I'd lie in the dark with my headphones and really, REALLY get to know a recording, in a way that I never do anymore.

I agree. I have some things I have barely or possibly never listened to (The 'nevers' are usually downloads from e-music or whatever) I also have African Serenades 1-13 (Thanks Grumpy) of which I think I've managed to listen to only vol 1. I used to do a radio show which helped but no longer.
Can someone please download me some more time???

Today I've been mainly listening to Manasseh- began with Sound Iration and I'm now around Dub The Millenium... Looking forward to the Such Is Life 10" by Judith- fantastic stuff ;D Tomorrow I've been told I have to spend the afternoon listening to Iration Steppas. Now, I love Iration Steppas, but I don't know if I can cope with 4 hours of it I'm thinking about doing it Diceman style next...

There are some fantastic tunes on there and some enormous variation (check Grumpy's specials if, like me, you're partial to a bit of variation). Respect Baldy

you have the rest of your life to listen to them, stop complaining about such petty shite, or Jah may decided to give you something to really complain about

giab,
the problem may be that the aquisition of new music is occuring at a rate higher than the relative time available for said music to be properly enjoyed. As it stands, the rest of our lives may not be quite enough time to do all of the listening we'd like to.
If we really fear Jah's judgment, we'll stop buying all of this music and give the money to the needy.
