I'll be there - both days usually. It helps that I can walk to Notting Hill in about 30mins.

And once you're there it's 30 minutes to navigate just one street ;D I've learned over time that it's best to spend a good bit of time at just one spot. Two years ago, I spent a few hours at Gladdy's and then a few hours at Jah Observers, briefly stopping to check Gaz Mayall's ninja pirate pagoda ting Respect Gordy

The massive will want to know that Ringo's is on as usual on the Saturday of carnival weekend.
Only dire weather will deter the Mrs and I from our usual spots on the Monday - the yard in front of Lord Gellys (Cambridge Gardens) and then Observer just off Talbot Road to finish.

I agree Gordon - I pretty much stick to Jah Observer/ Channel One these days - they are close to each other, they are also relatively near the Notting Hill Gate exit side (which is nearer to where I live - as opposed to coming out on Kensal Rise) so I can get in and out relatively quickly. I've spent Carnival before walking from one end to another - it takes hours, the crowds drive me mad - it's just not worth the hassle! I also tend to go alone - it's better than worrying if friends are enjoying it or not...

Yep, I'm going, maybe Sunday with the kids, assuming I have recovered from the 6th Annual Bash (assuming I am invited... ha!)... actually maybe Monday by myself, thinking about it.
G, it'd be nice to see you, and you Dani, but we'll probably have to leave it to chance to meet up. Or maybe not.
If you go reasonably early (like 1pm), it's still pretty easy to move about parts of the Fest but after about 5 it's a bloody nightmare. I usually cruise past Channel One and Gaz's and end up at Gladdy Wax as it is convenient for exiting north.

I went throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Carnival 1974 was my favourite, Carnival 1976 was the most exciting. I saw the fight break out that ruined the proceedings. While black youth and white police exchanged missiles I found solace with the Rastas from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. We stood on the green at Cambridge Gardens by Portobello Road chanting to Jah, and totally ignored by the adolescent West Indians and adolescent, pimply police engaged in their mutual hate. By the 1990s I'd had enough of the Carnival and haven't been at all in the 21st century. It seems like little has changed, admittedly the mighty Coxsone is no longer top sound there but even back then in the Seventies it was invariably Observer I'd stand up against outside the Rough Trade shop in Kensington Park Road. nowadays, it's too touristy (read white(, too crowded and too corporate for mu humble tastes.

Oh yes Dani, as long as you get the right map and advice from the old hands about where to go, and when etc then it is a fantastic experience - the streets reclaimed from Babylon.
But if you try and move around after about 4 or so then it can get HORRIBLE.
Standing on a street corner with a smoke and pounding reggae or trance - VERY GOOD!
I don't like soca particularly, easy to avoid.

Gaz's float is one to avoid for me; stupid stunts and gimmicks all day long and a dreadful shower of trendy idiots posing on deck.
1985 remains my favourite; fantastic weather, enough of the old flavourof pre-corporate carnival and wall to wall Sleng Teng and sensi. Happy days.

Get offa me toe is probably the most appropriate Fari toas for Carnival weekend. If G doesn't play it with the Gregory classic then I shall. You're all welcome to come to mine on the Saturday, more details to follow.

I agree with mse about the Gaz rockin' blues stage- it's utter crap! definitely one to avoid - a load of white trust fund trendies playing the sort of tunes you get on a Trojan best-of comp to an audience that think Madness invented ska.

I was at Observers with Dr Cool Breeze of this very board, two years ago and they dropped the wickedest Cornell Campbell tune I've ever heard. That's all I remember, cos I had a text file on my PC that read "find out what that Cornel tune was at Carnival" I forget the lyrics now but it was sweeter than candy. I couldn't get to the van to ask what it was due to the crowds. Respect Gordy
