Hello peeps
I've been asked to do a DJ spot at a night in a couple of weeks' time for a London sound called Killawatt. All I've been told is that it will be held at The Play Bar on Old Street on (get this) either the 15th or 16th! I was told I'd be mailed some flyers, still waiting on them.
Now do I go ahead and book my bus ticket or do I tell them to forget it, I don't like it when I don't have concrete details in front of me and am going on someone's word only.
Respect

Let them book your bus tickets That will show some commitment on their part. If it's practical, I'd come along - though listing a couple of excuses 1. it's my younger saucepan's 18th. birthday week-end - dunno what she's planning to be up to then 2. I'm still looking for a job, so may need to nurse my funds if not working

If they're paying, surely you should seek more comfortable travelling arrangements than the bus I take it this isn't Killawatt as in Carlton 'Killawatt' Valley and his special request to the man like Fred West Killawatt are a dance sound, aren't they? Is this the venue: www.playbar.co.uk/ ? Browsing through their site, if this was going ahead I think you'd know by now what date it was on - I get the impression that the private hire would be booked up some time in advance, especially for the period just before Christmas. Just a hunch, though. You could always travel down on spec, of course. Then if it's not happening, you could take one of the venue's poledancing classes instead ;D Respect, PapaS

invinciblemag.com/radio_tv/profile.php?id=20That's the guy there, I started listening to his online show and got in touch with him asking for a tune and he was impressed by my knowledge and said I should come down and do a guest spot. But as is the case with reggae peeps it seems that nothing's concrete and the date isn't even known for sure (15th or 16th!). (See Larry Marshall gig for other "is it", "ain't it" tings).... Ah, that Killerwatt. Didn't realise they were still around. Are they still based in Manchester? Or is the sound defunct and it's now a solo thing?
This being a London show, I thought you meant the guys behind the Kill-A-Watt label. It's those cheeky "a"s and "er"s confusing me. Though I suppose there are no hard and fast spelling rules in reggae. As I type, I'm plastered on kebab shop walls across Newcastle with a double "ll" thanks to the Curves crew - though I suppose no-one seeing it is going to notice, let alone confuse me with a next man. Still, given the obvious link between d n' b and illiteracy, a musical education is clearly coming their way.
If I were you I wouldn't book your ticket unless/until the gig's confirmed (and you've got a firm agreement that your expenses will be met).
Plenty of invites to play out come to nothing at the end of the day. Worst thing is chasing confirmation, hearing nothing and still getting flamed for not making a 200 mile trip on the off-chance that there might be a gig at the end of it! Technically, I guess actually making the trip and finding there's no gig would be worse, but I'm too sensible for that.

PapaS

I agree with Ephty. Let them book your tickets.
The 'Play Bar' on Old Street is a bit of a pretentious dive (IMO) that would rather be in Hoxton - selling overpriced bottles of lager to people who'd rather be in Hoxton.
When I played there about a year ago the floor was sticky with lager and the in-house sound system was pants.
I'd be surprised if a successful reggae night was happening there, purely because of bar prices. Still - could be I guess - but I'd make them book your bus fare to be sure (and buy you a couple of overpriced drinks)
