London it is for me then to see Monty Morris & Larry Marshall.
I've seen Buster and Horace Andy before. Not seen Jimmy Cliff but I'm suspecting lots of "Wild World" and "I Can See Clearly Now" rather than "Hurricane Hattie" and "One Eye Jacks".
Even if the Newcastle line up had been stronger on the Saturday then I'd probably still have gone to London as Monty Morris and Larry Marshall are two of my all time favourite singers.

Bad planning too IMHO, putting Scratch on the second day. Not unless he's going to perform his Studio 1 ska classics, which I doubt.

Just to add, before the JHC put a fatwah on me or something. This is a good weekend for those who haven't seen the acts before. The first day is a UK dub and lovers rock session with Horace Andy as a bonus and the second day.... well you're in for a treat with Buster.
However I must make the pilgrimage to see two of my own personal faves appearing in the UK for the first time ever.

Personally, I'm very, very excited by this. It can only be a good thing for the Newcastle scene. Doesn't matter if I've seen most of these acts before - we're pretty much guaranteed a good show from all of them, with the possible (probable) exception of Scratch.
The Jumpin Hot Club have been trying to book Jimmy Cliff for years, and word is he's agreed to fly over from JA exclusively for this show - so this is a real coup for them. Prince Buster, of course, was booked by them to play (at the Live Theatre!) in 2003, but the show was cancelled - though the reason was never clear.
I disagree that it's bad planning to book Scratch on Sunday. It's not a ska festival!
It's hugely ambitious of the JHC to put this on. Gotta give them a huge forward and all my support. (I think there may be one or two more names announced yet, too.)
Shame that it clashes with this London show, mind. I'm sure it'll be great seeing Monty Morris and Larry Marshall. I see your friend Dennis Alcapone will be there too, alongside BB Seaton. I was disappointed with the Gaylads' show at the Live Theatre a few years ago - they can only have played for 30 minutes, with an intermission - but Dennis is always entertaining.
Will you be at Derrick Morgan?

Might be at the Derrick show, depends on finances I guess...
I'm not dissing the Toon weekender, it's a nice line up and 99.9% of people will enjoy it I'm sure. But Monty Morris is like a ska god to me and Larry Marshall's one of my Studio 1 faves. Not seen BB before and Dennis always puts on a great show(even when the 45s are jumping all over the shop!!!). If it had been anyone but Monty Morris and Larry Marshall in London I'd have flipped a coin maybe!

Yep - not the kind of line-up we usually get in Newcastle!
It's worth travelling to see the London show, especially when you've never had the chance to see Monty Morris and Larry Marshall before - and may not get many chances again, considering this is their first UK show (is this really true? wow!).
I've only seen BB Seaton once (with a line-up billed as the Gaylads, but I couldn't tell you who the other vocalists were). The intro set from the band was longer than the Gaylads set, which as I say was split by an intermission. They just seemed to go through the motions. Considering it was an exclusive UK show, with a decent-sized crowd (especially for the Live Theatre), it was very, very disappointing. I can remember that Adam JHC was spitting feathers afterwards.
Hopefully that was a one-off, though, and everyone will play a blinder for you.
Hope to see you next Friday.
Respect,
PapaS

Had the pleasure of catching Pama Internationalin action on Saturday night, who are amongst the acts making up the number at Boss Sounds. Tremendous band who came in to their own in a live environment. It was great to see Lynval Golding treading the boards again. The whole place (The Maze, Notingham) was bouncing during the 1.40AM encore of 'Row Fisherman' and 'A Message To You Rudie' Got my digs in Jesmond sorted btw Rob

The people at BBC Tyne haven't got a clue.
Micky P will be chuffed to hear that he's a "sound system" DJ ;D
Mind, he does have lots of killer original ska 45s. He could maybe beat me in a ska clash (depending who was the most pissed on the night lol).
Haven't heard from him for a while, hope he's okay.
Doesn't look like I can make it on Sunday now, got told last week I could get a lift and now apparently I can't. Our kid changes his mind like the fucking weather....

Yes, nice photos from that Toots show, but Yve's captions aren't really up to much. And what's with the pic of Scratch's shoes? It's like "the hand of Jah" all over again... ;D
Mick was at the Derrick Morgan show, straight off the plane from his hols, shorts and all. Only time I've ever seen him without his suit. Didn't get chance to talk to him as I only spotted him late on and he'd gone by the time I got off the decks, but he looked good - if a little under-dressed compared to normal.
I'd offer you a bed for Sunday night, but I'm afraid you've been beaten to it and there's no vacancies at the Stalawatt motel. Is there no-one else who can put you up for the night?
Hope you find a way to reach.
Respect,
PapaS

No problems mate, I used to be able to stay with my mate at Wallsend (who came to Chambers with me that time) but he's started working permanent nights.
It seems that things are totally conspiring against me reaching anything in the Toon at the moment.
I know that Glen was looking for some new selectors to help out with Panagea and I offered my services, then realised "er, how am I going to be able to reach half the dances?"......
I was just commenting to someone the other day that it's actually easier for me to play out in London than it is in the Toon!!!!!!

I know that Glen was looking for some new selectors to help out with Panagea Was he? It's not like he's playing out on the sound much at the moment. You sure he wasn't just looking for someone to shift speaker boxes?
