Belter show from Derrick, looking particularly sharp in zoot suit, shades and trilby. His voice is still sounding sweet and strong. I'm no good at remembering set lists, but among things he sang were Hold U Jack / Wet Dream, Rudie Don't Fear, See And Blind, er... At one point he touched a verse of Conquering Ruler a capella. He also touched a little of 007 Shanty Town as a tribute to Desmond Dekker. His encore was Blazing Fire and Moon Hop. The set tended towards upbeat ska, but was nicely paced with a few slightly slower numbers throughout.
The Cluny was just about full, and for a change the dancefloor was busy even in my warm-up slot. Backing band Freetown were nice and tight, and looked to be having fun. The skins from the Toon clearly enjoyed themselves - a good measure of quality for a ska show, I reckon. Everyone else seemed to have a good night, too. And the promoters reckoned it was their best gig of the year so far.
All in all, a much better evening out than drowning Dr Cool Breeze's sorrows in Birmingham the next night, after Anthony B and Richie Spice didn't show.
Respect,
Papa S

Yes a very good night indeed - enjoyed the show and looking forward to the future shows that Jumping Hot Club have lined up. Yes Pa drown my sorrows indeed - carried on drowning them on Sunday as well and woke up this morning with a stinking hangover and very light wallet!! But it takes more than that to keep me down and will be back for more possible punishment in 3 weeks time. By the way Gordy there's a lush Aston Villa bar in Birmingham called Billys Bar - next time your down pop in and remember to wear your Villa top.

I won't be in Brum for God knows how long now. No reason to go there these days. Not even to see the mighty Villa as I've got SKY and dodgy Chinese internet footy links Respect Gordy

Re: the Anthony B etc...
When are reggae promoters and artists going to get their fucking act together?
I'm tired of reading about no show after no show....
If Larry Marshall and Monty Morris don't show on November 18th I'll go fucking ballistic....
Respect
Gordy
PS: Are tickets on sale for the Larry Marshall show yet, anyone know?

It's a well known fact that jamaican artists have always been unreliable and it's always the same old "Blame it on the visa" ting. They won't even turn up for a show in their own country if the crowd ain't big enough. Used to it now and it still pisses me off

I have heard a rumour that Prince Buster will be making live appearances in Britain during the autumn. Does anyone know anything about this, please?

I saw Buster at Bunny Lee's 65th birthday party last month. He never mentioned any gigs. However, if you ring Trojan and speak to Delroy Williams I'm sure he'll let an important music writer like yourself know. Oh, and I'm sure you have Trojan's number!
