Great news - after a year's break Right On! finally returns on
Saturday 23rd September in a fantastic new West End venue - Torts.
Details as follows:
Right On! @ Torts, 78 High Holborn, London WC1V 6LS
(1 min walk from Holborn tube)
Saturday 23rd September. 9pm - 3.30am
Admission £5 before 10pm; £8 after. Concessions £4.
Torts has a capacity of 300+ and is the ideal venue for both serious
dancers and those who just wish to listen to the music and socialise.
It boasts a large wooden dancefloor, air conditioning and a separate
chill-out room with bar. It is easily reachable by tube and bus and I
am informed there is good parking around the venue.
In partnership with recently relaunched legendary Latin music label
Fania, this night will be the official launch of new CD "El Barrio:
The Bad Boogaloo". Compiled by Dean Rudland and due for release at the
end of September, this CD features classic and rare Latin boogaloo
tracks from the 1960s. Free copies will be given away to the first 25
customers on the night... so get down early!
As usual, our music policy will be a unique blend of the very best
vintage black sounds from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and beyond - all on
original vinyl - covering soul jazz, bop, Latin jazz, rhythm & blues,
doo wop, soul, funk, boogaloo, mambo, salsa, samba, cumbia, ska,
rocksteady, reggae, calypso, mento, highlife and more!
And to ensure the top-notch quality sound that this music deserves, we
will now be using the Gladdy Wax sound system, which is well known as
one of the best and most popular sound systems at London's Notting
Hill Carnival.
I am also pleased to welcome back to Right On! two of the UK's most
highly respected selectors as guest DJs for the night: the legendary
Gladdy Wax himself and Dean Rudland from Fania records.
Jamaican sound man Gladdy Wax gained popularity in the 1970s on
Birmingham's famous Quaker City sound system. He has been running his
own sound system for over 30 years now and boasts an incredible
collection of Jamaican and Afro-American tunes.
Dean Rudland has compiled well over 100 highly influential albums for
some of the world's greatest record labels such as Fania, Blue Note,
Ace, BGP and Acid Jazz. As well as some killer Fania boogaloo and
Latin jazz, Dean has promised to play some previously unreleased funky
soul acetates he has come across that have never before been played
out anywhere!
This should be a truly memorable night and is the first Right On!
event since the end of April 2005. I do hope you can make it down and
would really appreciate it if you could forward this email on to all
of your friends and contacts. If this first night at Torts goes well
we will be looking at making this a regular affair (e.g. monthly) so
please come and show your support.

Best wishes and keep on keepin' on!
