Picked up my copy of "Sister Pili + 2" by Moreno and L'Orch First Moja-One (Sterns Music STCD3062) from Jumbo's this evening. Moreno Batamba has one of those voices that can send you soaring with its glorious mix of the mournful and the joyful. After listening to the opening track, I've had to peel myself off the ceiling. Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC4Ojl-D2zYAlso during the same raid on the store, I purchased "Songs from the Shipyards" by The Unthanks. This won't be to everyone's taste though and probably needs to be heard in the context of the documentary film that the songs were performed for. However it does contain what I think is the best version of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" that I've heard. Tried in vain to see if I could find a Youtube clip of it to post.

Sterns have also pressed some 10" copies of Sister Pili/Danger Girl...
but for whatever reason the more I hear of variants of this sound I keep getting drawn back to orchestra makassy (mume wangu) and Samba mapangala (Ahmed Sabit)....
if I were to die floating on water with those songs at maximum volume I would leave this planet with a huge smile on my face
