As there are not many Congolese concerts taking place it was nice that there was one not that far away in Antwerp which also started early, and what a concert it was. It took place in a cultural centre not far from the centre of town and also very easy to reach (the busstop was almost in front of it). The hall was not too big but what was good was that there were seats like in a theatre so everyone had a good view of the stage. About 200 people had turned up, among them about 20 Africans, not many. We were not the only people from Holland because we heard several people speak Dutch, in Belgium Dutch is also spoken but their accent is completely different from ours and it is also called Flemish.
The Odemba OK Allstars were formed by guitarist Dizzy Mandjeku after the death of Franco to keep his musical legacy alive. Most of the members played with Franco and others with Zaiko Langa Langa, singer Malage being the only one who had been a member of both bands. The band started around 20.30 and played for an hour or so then taking a short break and then played for another hour. They started with an instrumental followed by a Wendo Kolosoy song and then a song which had a fantastic rhythm but unfortunately I do not know the title of the song. The sound was very very good, every instrument was clearly audible it was a joy to listen to. Among the songs being played were Oh Miguel with Malage singing the lead vocal and what also stood out was the fantastic part played by the two saxes and trumpets. Singer Yannick Koy sang Pesa position and Nana sang Africa Mokili Mobimba. What I liked most of all were the long sebenes without any screaming to spoil them. Both Dizzy and Toms played solo, Toms taking care of the Zaiko like sebenes. After two hours they stopped, leaving a happy and content public.
