Hey I second and third the nomination for Billy Preston.
Let's face it, John didn't play the piano solo on "Get Back"

and "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" was about LSD if i may add to the knowledge .... from memory the title came from a painting by one of their kids who was either pre school or just at primary school..when asked what the picture was the kid said "it's Lucy(her doll perhaps?) in the sky with diamonds"...it sounded catchy and they used it...i think it was Paul who related the story...it's usually him but i'm not sure whose kid it was..the initials are just a coincidence... i don't think that if you play the dead wax backwards on sgt peppers you hear anything earth shattering either...urban myth

...i think it was Paul who related the story...it's usually him but i'm not sure whose kid it was.. It could not have been Paul, he's dead. The kid was Julian. The walrus was Paul. OK?

I remember hearing (or reading) a Lennon interview where he stated that inspiration for the lyric came from his son Julian, who came home with a painting that he described as "Lucy In The Sky.........". More likely is that it is written when John was baked on LSD, as quite a bit of his stuff from that era was. People were always playing "cat and mouse" references to drugs back then....the press would feign outrage, and the writer would innocently blush, with a nudge and a wink, claiming "coincidence".

I agree that this song was probably inspired by Lewis Carroll. For all his vaunted intellectualism, Lennon had quite limited literary taste. He took his influences from Carroll, the Goons, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc and other poets writing for children. However, Lennon didn't have the craft of a Carroll; his metaphors are clumsy and inappropriate. Lines like "tangerine trees", "cellophane flowers", "rocking horse people", "newspaper taxis" and "looking glass ties" are not only nonsensical but also tawdry and unpoetic.

Still no mention for Phil Ackrill, who (according to some websites) has been playing the role of Faul McCartney since the start of 1967?
