I Saw the "Barefoot Diva" last night and was sorely disappointed. Sold out Massey Hall (about 2,500 fans), and the band was tight and the warm up act ("African Guitar Summit") had put the crowd in a festive mood...
But the show was unbelievably dull. Evora's band seemed to be having a decent time, but the problem was the singer. From the opening of the show she seemed miserable - as if she'd been pulled away from her TV in order to entertain unwanted guests.
No charisma, no enjoyment, no entertainment value.
And even though her voice is still strong, after about 5 tunes, the music just blended together into one pleasant but ultimately boring song.
The only word she said to the audience was "goodbye" in Portugese.
If you are a fan and are tempted to buy tickets to her show, I suggest you spend the money on her new CD, a flashlight and a couple bottles of wine.
That way you can relive the concert experience by playing the music while shining a "spotlight" on a photo of Evoria. Just as stimulationg.
And you can also get drunk on the wine.
