Ray Barretto listening marathon going on. Btw, he's one of the few artists I have more than 20 albums from. Last of the real conga greats gone, Chano Pozo, Mongo Santamaria & Ray Barretto (there are more good ones of course, but they're really apprentices, those three remain the original masters of the conga art)

And here's one tune from the 1964 album "Guajira Y Guaguanco" recorded with his charanga style band. It's called Guajira Soul and it has strangely enough Jamaica connectiion since the following year Soul Brothers/Wailers cut this same tune retitled Guajira Ska. It's based on old Peanut Vendor melody but this Barretto's version is very clearly the one that was used as template. Here you go, enjoy, s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3N80X2VRBDIIL3MMBY2VR5YRPN

"El Watusi" - belting tune - even hints of a JA-style rhythm in there.
R.I.P.

Not to mention that solo piano followed by incessant horn riff and floating flute on El Watusi.

Not to mention that solo piano followed by incessant horn riff and floating flute on El Watusi. Respect Gordy I think you're talking about the '65 remake (from Viva Watusi) than the original 62 hit version. The original did only have flute solo punctuated by violins playing a simple riff. 65 version adds more instruments like trumpets. Good versions both.

The version I have must be the later one then.
It's on a 2CD set on Fania Salsa Classics label called the Best Of Ray Barretto.

RIP Mr Barretto
Ahorn - do you know anything much about the Haitian percussionist Albert Laguerre?

Thanks anyhow ahorn - from what I know of him Albert Laguerre, who was billed as master drum-priest of the Rada-Dahomey cult, toured the world with the Katherine Dunham dancers until he hit Australia in the mid-50s and he decided to stay here.

Thanks for the clarification, ahorn - and extra many thanks for the tunes as well - I've downloaded both - I'll listen in a bit I had no idea which version I had, since the record (U.K. Mojo 2092 022 - 1971) notes it as 1968 The distortion may be because it's been played many times down the years or because it was pressed ever so slightly "off centre"

CTI has never been known for its rawness. Smooth jazz before the term was coined. But terminology and pigeonholes aside, great enjoyable stuff, Barretto and many other CTI albums.
