There are now 10 volumes in the African Serenades series and over the last two or three evenings I've been having an industrial-scale burning session with the result that I have spare copies of them all, so if anyone needs any of the discs to complete (or start out) their set or would just like one or two from Bedward's "yousendit" lists above that take their fancy then please pm or e-mail me

Grumpy or bedward, Looking for some recommendations. I have King Sunny Ade's Synchrosystem and Orchestra Baobab's Specialist in All Styles - that's the limit of my African music, but I'd like to buy more. On balance I probably prefer the rhythms on the KSA album but I like them both a lot. Could you recommend 3 or 4 other cds which you would say are must have cds either by these guys or some other African musician? Cheers, Mark.

Cheers Mark! Get some of the African Serenades Grumpy is offering, check out what you like and then buy some stuff. Most compilers have laid down the original sources. You can't get a much better introduction.

That's probably a good idea Ekki (by the way you're better looking than I'd imagined ) So Grumpy, maybe I can take you up on the offer of a cdr or 2. I'm not sure what I would have that is worth trading but I'm sure we can work somehting out. I would like them simply as an introduction to help me buy the right stuff. Cheers, Mark.

I'm SOOOO excited. Many years ago when the world was young I used to teach in the heartland of the Shaygya tribe in Sudan. The foremost Shaygy singer was a man called Muhammed Jubara. I never saw him perform as he'd cleared off for the dimmish lights of Khartoum before I arrived. However all the local hafla singers (accompanying themselves on the 5 string tambur) used to cover his songs. One of his best known was a song called "Nura". My pupils attempted to teach me to sing this song with, I have to say, very limited success (fault lies with my lack of singing skills rather than their prowess as instructors). However, word quickly got around that I could caterwaul a line or two of said song and it became, by default, my party-piece. My tuneless renditions tended to be met with howls of merriment rather than aesthetic approbation. Whenever I got invited out for breakfast on a Friday I would have to repay the hospitality by making an ass of myself with the song. And of course, having sung it once, the youngsters in the family would dash out to tell all their friends and families who would then turn up for a repeat rendition. I quickly got pretty tired of this and used to insist when invited out that I would only come on condition that I didn't have to sing 'Nura'. "No you won't have to", I was promised. But of course no sooner had breakfast finished than someone would shout out "Nura". No! I put my foot down. But inevitably one of the doe-eyed sistren of the household would plead "sing for me". So what could one do? And having sung for her the other girls would then demand that I sang it for them. Hopeless (and I promise you my singing was). I rather thought I had left this song behind many years ago. Imagine my surprise and delight then when yesterday, in attempting to source tunes for my next African Serenades compilation, I came across Muhammed Jubara's original version of this song. Yesterday afternoon was engulfed in a sort of Proustian memory regained happiness fest as I played it over and over in a kind of ecstatic disbelief. I couldn't credit my ears. And the song really is a cracker, believe me, and you lucky people are going to hear it on my next African Serenades compilation. Also slated for inclusion so far are a lovely rumba inflected song by Waldemar Bastos from Angola, a tune from Mosese Fan Fan which if you have the Golden Afrique Vol 2 you will be familiar with but I have got hold of a slightly extended version from the same recording, a terrific piece from the Akhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar, something absolutely gorgeous from Oum Kalthoum, and a beautiful song from Abdel Karim el Kabli from Sudan. I think there might also be a storming Mahlathini song and perhaps some Orchestra Matimila though am still debating these last two. Have about half to two thirds of the disc sorted so far.

Spot on, Prof! Thanks for sharing these memories, Chris - I'll guess I'll hear "Nura" (a song I'm not familiar with) with different ears.

Sadly, I am unable to open the link from yousendit. Does anyone have the track listing for African Serenades 1-6?
Or, a link where I can download it?
Thanks
