Isn't it quite strange that according to the definitions on podomatic (at least how I read it) the views (either page or feed) decide your position in the rankings and not the amount of downloads? So if many people view my page, but noone downloads anything cause it turns out to be mighty uninteresting, the podcast will still be high in the ranking. That's kinda weird I think, or am I missing something?
Podomatic definitions:
Page views represent the number of times your podcast page has been viewed. If you drive traffic to your podcast page this number will rise and increase the chances of being one of the top 100 podcasts.
Feed views are the number of times your RSS feed has been retrieved by a podcatcher (iTunes, etc...). The more people that access your feed the higher you will be in our top 100.
Downloads are the number of times your mp3s have been downloaded by either a podcatcher or directly from your podcast page.
Just wondering.

Yep, its all a bit skewed. I don't think I've ever been in the top 100, but if I was to rename my page House of Nubile Young Ladies, then I guess I'd be rocketing up the charts!!
Also re: the feed views. I did ask a question on their forum about what exactly is a feed view and didn't get a definitive response, but its something like the number of times itunes and other podcast sites view your site to see if you have a new show listed, which happenes automatically through the number of subscribers you have.... or something like that anyway. Does anyone else have a better description?

Frankly the podomatic rankings and such are just a bit odd. I've seen things in my "player history" that I've never visited, but that are very popular on the site (constantly in the top 3)

haha...Nice one Mike! I noticed that certain podcast including mine have been added to a certain "ska toolbar" This has made my page views sky rocket. Theres a certain new podcaster that has only been around for 3 months and now is consistantly in the top 3 of music due to his high usage of this tool bar, postings in forums and the various myspace and yahoo groups. My rank had gone up dramatically due the many forums i post in and because of that, my page gets more hits through search engines. I agree with you taht the rankings are based on page views and unique visitors. If you drive traffic to podomatic then podomatic shows you some love and makes you feel special, like your a champ, this encouraging you to do more. it's actually quite genius of them. But, for all of the podcasters with real rich content, and a REAL following, it sucks that they do not reap the benefits of their labor in thie way too.

Yes it's the Ska toolbar thing for me too Gabe. I'd love to claim that my high ranking was due to extreme popularity unfortunately that wouldn't be entirely true. My actual listeners have gone up marginally but not nearly as much as a top ten place would suggest.

I've shot into the top 20 thanks to the ska toolbar now too Apparently I'm getting almost 7000 feed views a day but only a couple hundred downloads. I still don't understand really but ain't complaining. Respect Gordy

Ah, I just realised why I was continually awol in the listings, I hadn't registered my podcast as a music show (doh!), so having done that and appearing on the ska bar of course, I'm now catching you all up! Feed Views is definately just how many times subscribers/toolbar users etc log on to their pc's and each time they do this, their pc does an automatic check for new shows and each check results in a feed view. So its got nothing to do with people listening to your show. That is only covered with the Download stats. So the charts aren't really a reflection of listens but just how many sites/toolbars etc you are on. But I guess being high in the charts will help your show become more visible and result in more listens eventually. I think thats right anyway......

Yep that's right and responsible for me realising that I'm doing a fraction of the listens I thought I was... more like 16,000 per month The toolbar is only really helping me get higher on Podomatic and get more subscriptions, (which will I hope work well for future casts), it doesn' seem to have upped my downloads too much, in fact somehow, I think they may have taken a dip. It just shows though that being 11th on the entire Podomatic site, or 6th in the Music section actually means fuck all. Adding weight to my argument that it should be on downloads only, anything else is sharp practice innnit?

Adding weight to my argument that it should be on downloads only Yep, for a representive 'chart' that seems to be the only good measuring point. Charts aside, I'm more happy that today I got my record of number of comments on one mix (the Tullo one), 14 in total from 14 different listeners (so no back and forth commenting) taking the effort to leave a message of appreciation, love that!

Well I gotta say our subscribers have gone up in the last 2 months too, and I think THAT is where it counts. If you were in it for the money and trying to get some attention, with a healthy amount of subscribers you could do so. I read an interview for that punkcastradio.com and they mentioned that when their listener ship reached 10,000 they really started to mobilize. For our podcast, I'm happy with being able to help friends get their music heard, and those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to reach some person in Indonesia or South Africa. It's great to be able to share music with people. Being able to get excited about somthin and say hey check this out on a global scale. So screw poomatic's retarded stats!!!
