One of the things I like about Jamaican music from the 60s is that it's so varied. They hadn't figured out what the music was yet and few recordings sound rote. This is particularly true for songs in the transitional period between ska and rocksteady in 1966-7. As an example is a song I've had for a long time but never really listened to;
The Sharks - 'I Wouldn't Baby'
What a nice tune, but not easy to categorize, it's a mid-paced boogaloo but the singing is very middle-of-the-road pop, like something Chad & Jeremy could have done. But then to make it thoroughly Jamaican there's a melodica doing minor-key stuff throughout.
Can be found on the flip of the Ethiopians 'Owe Me No Pay Me'.

Shhhhhhhh - that's my secret killer. What a great tune and even better at full blast. I don't think I've heard any earlier example of melodica and that ricky-tick percussion is hardly the usual Studio One fare.
