A white guy from Bristol who started playing sounds in a pub frequented by Jamaicans about 40 years ago. Reputation grew and grew (as did his record collection) - there was even a BBC2 documentary about him in the mid 90s (which is where I first heard of him) Musical quality-wise, the track selection is top, but exceptionally unimaginative (there were only a couple of tunes I didn't have already). With a massive collection, logically, something more imaginative could have been done Here's a link to the remarks I put up on the Trojan board: www.trojanrecords.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2465

I've seen Derek a few times now and he has never really suprised or impressed me with his selections great character but a bit of a people pleaser these days rather than seeming to play tunes that he really likes. As with his Trojan release he always has played the obvious when I have seen him. C.D

my mate mike was impressed by him becuase he was drawing a lot of versions on one rhythm, particularly well known (Mike never said what) and playing some odd and obscure stuff, now Mike's a Reggae man, but perhaps not as deeply into it as we, so he might have been more easily impressed than the Royal 'We'.

I caught half the recently shown documentary on the Community Channel, intriguing stuff, but like everyone has said, a disappointing selection to put out.
