Intersting article, though I am at odds with this statement: " Like the music of the 1960s, which gave birth to Marley, (Clyde) McKenzie says, "every generation throws out gifted people". He mentioned that two Jamaican greats of this era could easily be found in the talent of Rastafarians Jah Cure and Damian 'Jnr Gong' Marley. "A song like Welcome to Jamrock could reasonably stand with any piece from any era," said an unapologetic McKenzie, adding that, Jamaican music is now in one of the most fertile periods the industry has seen." Though I love his version, "Jamrock" isn't even a Damian Marley original rhythm (it's Ini Kamoze, isn't it? ...all this is far too modern for an old crock like myself ). I'll concede that there is a definite type of creativity in taking on old bassline, rhythm or whatever and making it sound fresh with different artists, lyrics, overriding tune, horn line etc. I've always loved this practice, from way back and the fairly recent "World Jam" one-rhythm album is a good example of this creativity IMVHO of course

sometimes i am a little fed up with reading stuff like this, not to mention this harping on often come from the same artists, most of whom have done well for themselves, thank you. as much as i am not a capleton fan, i still believe he has done more for the evolution of JA music than a guy like ken lazarus has. FMc G is also too often involved in such worthless debates : too bad, if he took more time analyzing why he has released so many weak tunes these last 20 years, he'd have been the "legitimate" heir to Marley and D Brown. With such a vocal talent he could have done soooo much better. Does he really need others to take the blame. i'm a but tough here but luckily he sometimes remembers to release some great modern tunes with Cave crew and even a very good album with bobby digital last year. in the meantime, what about the great talents who have fallen into oblivion year after year? what about those living in rundown places, those barking and yapping in the street, those trying to move people into giving them some money for their next crack dose or box of pills, those dead in dire poverty seems like the major JA press rarely take them into account. as for Jamrock, yep, a good tune but frankly nothing to harp on about for years and years : had the guy been named Jr Killer, Julian Marlowe or whatever, it would have just remained a local hit.I really like the lyrics, though. the whole album is just too much at a time...
