Bangarang Version with Glen Adams and U-Roy.
It's on the Bunny Lee Story Jet Star 4cd Box set for anyone who doesn't have it on 7"etc.
Well done with the translation too, it's not that easy to make out the very beggining.. I recall that Bunny Lee claimed that this tune (original Bangarang that is) was the first 'Reggae' tune proper on a TV Documentary I have, but it's too late for that isn't it?

Striker also told me that this was U Roy's first ever waxing.

oh... blimey, that's an interesting one... cheers for that Mr. R. Really Before he did the stuff for Duke? & Is it I-Roy he's reffering to in the tune. I always thought I-Roy was a slightly later on the scene Deejay than Daddy U-Roy... ? Which would make that tale seem unlikely, havn't a clue if he was or wasn't, and perhaps well known on the Sounds before he recorded anyway.. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO can hear this tune here - www.btinternet.com/~mikemurphy/sounds/glenadamsuroy_bangarangversion.mp3

When I first interviewed U Roy in 1976, he told me that Roy Reid was one DJ he very much disliked. He said I Roy used to come to King Tubby's dance and study him; and then stole his name.

Strange then that he would honour him with a mention on his first ever tune then methinks

U Roy was first known as I Roy. The original Version Galore album was credited on the sleeve to I Roy. Confusingly, U Roy had Treasure Isle 45s released prior to the release of the 'Version Galore' album credited to Hugh Roy. Similarly, of his two 45s for Lloyd Daley, 'Scandal' was credited to Hugh Roy whilst 'Sound of the Wise' was credited to I Roy. Hope that helps !

If I Roy copied U Roy then he didn't copy him very well. I have always thought their styles are very different and distinctive. Like from a different planet.
To defend I Roy: at least his given name is really Roy while U Roy is not Roy.

It's well known that Hugh Roy was U-Roy, but I'm pretty sceptical that U-Roy was originally called I-Roy regardless of mis pressings spellings and all that confusing Jamaican printed matter gone horribly wrong 'jazz', what proof of that do you have? I mean straight from the Camel's mouth proof. I'm not poo pooing your version of events, far from it, just that over time, I've found caution useful... I'd be exciting at this news if it's verbatim Kosher!!

It'll be the same tune with a different title that Dave Home is telling you about on B&F Mike!

I've always preferred I Roy over U Roy and Dennis Alcapone over them both.

U-Roy was the first artist to be called I Roy. The voices in the intro sound like the tape has been spliced (edited). Is that Bunny Lee's voice?

Well thanks for that, still ike some proof, I'm quite happy to believe it don't get me wrong.. but unfortunately as is the case with a lot of Jamaican music history, just becuase a lot of people think a thing, don't make it neccesarily so.
The more people who say it's ture though, the more I';m inclined to shut up and believe it ;-)
Gordy!!
I can't Stand Alcapone!! just thought you should know that ...

Not gonna lose any sleep over it Mikey! Each to their own. Maybe I'm biased towards Dennis as he's a top bloke who I've hung out with a couple of times.

I'm sure he's a wonderful chap, just that I don't get on with his style, not riding enough for my tates, I like em like U-Roy, U-Brown, I-roy,... earlier Stitt, Comic more talkover style, Alcapone does a slightly more rhythmic thing, just doesn't really get me going, havn't seen him live though... seen him, hanging around, just not on stage..

Alcapone made a lot of releases and a lot of poor tunes. However, 'Forever Version' is a toast classic, so rent a tile and stay for a while.

Didn't U-Roy's "(Earth's) Rightful Ruler" - cut for Scratch - come out before his Duke Reid toast???
