just a few words to let you know that these classic UK sounds will be available again on the 21st of February on the new Soul Village label (from Paris). the same guys had already released another PG collection some years ago.

Was playing the Pressure Sounds collection Dont Call Us Immigrants today and one of the many standout tracks was....... - you guessed it, Hard Times by Pablo Gad. The sleevenotes say that Pablo wrote Hard Times as a reflection of a visit he had to Jamaica in 1979. "On returning to England it struck him everyone was complaining about how hard things were. Having just witnessed a whole different kind of suffering in Jamaica he wrote "Hard Times" to let people realise their lot in life was not as bad as it seemed - "They at least got their rent paid and their Giro every week""
Great track by the way

i must say that there are a few other gems on that reissue: i am not too familiar with that discreet artist - apart from the other album reissued by the french label Melodie some years back, but i reckon i'll pay more attention to this "new" one.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been loving Don't Call Us Immigrants since I bought it around a year ago. I'm definitely interested in exploring more UK sounds.

Matumbi and Capital Letters are definitely bands i suggest you try, then! though less consistant, Reggae Regular and BLack Roots had some killers too, certain more obscure productions by Dennis Bovell souldn't be under-rated either...wish someone put them all together on an anthology.

yeah - i bought both Matumbi CD anthologies that are currently in print.
on ebay recently, I saw that Seven Seals as an old Japanese import was listed - was this a bootleg?
I also bought the Makasound Black Roots CD and love it. Are you talking about the same Black Roots? I still haven't read the liner notes for that release...
I also wish that more Dennis Bovell production anthologies were available. From what I recall, track by track production credits weren't listed in the liners for Don't Call Us Immigrants.
Don't remember hearing Reggae Regular before...

tracklisting / Hard times black before creation crisis reggae music sad mistake oh jah tougher than the world leaders of the world gun fever throw your dreams lighter shade of black iration
Incidentally, it seems that a number of The Reggae Regukar guys were some of the musicians working for Pablo under the name of Zion Steppers. I am not a specialist of that era, so that might be wrong.

some more info on that release : instead of 10 tunes you now have 12 and 2 of the original release have been replaced by 4 others.the artwork is different too. you now have Gun Fever, Throw Your Dreams, Lighter Shade of Black (dub to Hard Times) and Iration, a sort of dubby tribute to Satta where PG performs some dub poetry. All of those were originally released on 12" s. an additional song had been considered to be included : PG In Love, but PG turned it down as being too syrupy, unworthy of his rugged personality!
