Been meaning to ask you Penny...
What is your take on Vivian Jones? Are you a fan of his music/song writing style? Can't say I've ever heard you speak of him, so just curious....
Aside from Penny - would like to know what others think of Vivian's material...
Also has ANYONE seen him perform recently??? Is he a low-profile guy in the UK or do you all see him around?
Thanks

Istitutionalize Racism a tune based around the Stephen Lawrence enquiry is one of my favourite tunes of all time. Also like a tune from a while back called Dust Bin Material.

;D Zebulon - looks like they borrowed each others outfits - grandma jones needs the bandana still I've always liked this picture of the REAL Vivian: Gosh, I would look like like a real jack-ass in yellow pants Works for Vivian though. Yeah Mikey - I've heard about that Institutionalized Racism track but never heard it [sure would like to --- Dustbin Material is a fine cut. None of you UK'ers see VJ around town - either playing or hanging out??? I'm not a huge fan of his lovers stylee - but I do think Vivian is very good at writing and composing roots tunes. Would love to see him perform one day

not sure that mr. reel consider mr. jones as "reggae" personally i find that vj is more of a singles artist than album artist - heard some excellent singles from him (babylon don't care, dustbin material, jah music) but just listened to "iyaman" today & had to skip most of it. quite common in reggae music though !

The Shaka 12" Red Eyes/Got A Light is worth a spin as is the Ruff Cutt Lp/CD 'Bank Robbery'. I heard Shaka play a killer cut of 'Flash It An Gwaan' at a dance way back. I agree with Dots over 'Good Morning Jah', great tune.
The LP he did with Shaka is pretty good too.

Roots Ting (North London) used used to play 'Institutionalized Racism' and another cut on the same rhythm (Joe Frazier) and both cuts were deadly, but I never saw them for sale and presumed they were dubs. Anyone know otherwise?

a better version of "got a light" to my ears anyway can be found on that nattoroius cd by one of those creation rebel guys, i forget his name.
bank robbery lp is one of my favorites as is big leaders and its dub companion.
dustbin material is a great single.
while everyone raves about his shaka release jah works i find it underwhelming.
one love llib haj

Anyone know otherwise? damn roots ting played the same back to back here in Dublin many years ago. didnt realise Vivian Jones was the vocalist at the time. boom tunes both and likewise never heard or seen them since though i sorta remember them as being regular releases not specials, could be wrong though (?) respect Dots

I highly rank Vivian Jones although like stated here above he's released some excellent singles and wicked albums as well. But mind that he's a real lovers singer as well so dont be suprised if you be lovers rocking to one of his tunes later on.
Zapatoo: Since many of Vivian Jones albums are kind hard to get hold of I recommend his works together with Shaka and Big Leaders which shouldnt be to hard to get. I reckon seeing his latest album which carry many Barry O Hare rhythms on Ebreggae as well. Only heard that album once though so I cant recommend it fully.
