this month june 16th here in bristol the wicked and dreadful downbeat melody system has as guest selctor chris lane Already buying reggae records at 13 became the first reggae reviewer at 17 with his regular column for Blues & Soul. He spent his 18th birthday with Lee Perry at the Black Ark & during his month’s stay in Kingston got to talk with all the key JA producers & performers: Bob Marley, Pablo, Prince Buster, Coxsone Dodd, Big Youth, Derrick Harriot, Glen Brown et al. His love for the music could be found in all key music magazines of the period. As a producer for his own (with Dub Vendor’s John MacGillivray) imprint, Fashion, Chris has also produced many top JA & UK reggae artists. Has had national & reggae chart success, with the likes of Smiley Culture, Cutty Ranks, Top Cat, General Levy & more. And he was there engineering for Maxi Priest when he broke out into the mainstream with the album ‘You’re Safe’ As a compiler he put together the classic Augustus Pablo ‘Original Rockers’ set & has created many compilations for Greensleeves, Pressure Sounds, Trojan. He continues to write about reggae and play out for Tighten Up, Pressure & Slide & Coast to Coast.
