best night out in a long time. huge crowd royally entertained by two masters of the vintage clash. not that it mattered , but scorpio a narrow winner on points by my scorecard but that's beside the point as both roddy and scorpio went toe to toe trading plates from shabba, bounty, ninja, capleton, supercat, nicodemus, bushman, gregory, dennis, sugar, barrington , freddy mc g, half pint, everton blender .... with all the best thrust and parry & repartee of clash play. 2 20 minutes sets each before one for one. roddy slow to warm up and easily bested by scorpio first round but came back with a uk artist segment - papa levi, maxi priest, bitty, d brown with aswad. the one for ones were good fun - a brutal john holt exchange & then roddy answering derrick morgan with 'hard man fe dead' buster & then closing with johnny osbourne over dem a payaka. scorpio the biggest forward of the night for'pick up your dubs and throw them away'.
definitely worth getting hold of a copy of this one - scorpio played a barrngton levy over kette drum early doors that will get worn out if i get hold of a recording. big up ringo & stephen & crew for the company. T.

Nicely summed up T, a great night, and anyone who left early doors missed some real entertainment in the 1 for 1's. I usually tire of the 30 second and pull up routine, but when two showmen with huge arsenals of dubs go head to head the quick fire counteraction takes over.
Wish the Hoot's sound system was up to the task, but they all just got on with it.
Loved the Pick Up the Pieces plate, perhaps equalled for me by the slew of Barrington specials. Scorpio as might be expected favoured 80's digital rhythms quite heavily, some beauties from Johnny Osbourne. Roddi ran the full gamut from this week's JA number one (forgettable) to a couple of deep, swirling King Tubbys mixes which were absolutely top drawer.
Great to see both crews pushing each other but showing absolute respect and havingn huge amounts of fun.
