Following on from Penny's post in the Record Collector thread:
"Current items they know nothing of include the Charles Ross album on Sugar, the original copy of The Royals 'Pick Up The Pieces' with the green cover, Yabby You's 'King Tubby's Prophecy Of Dub', Dennis Brown's 'Deep Down', Charles Collin's white label Delroy Wilson LP, Third World's Delroy Wilson double LP featuring early "dubplate" style mixes by Prince Jammy and many more."
What do you think are the rarest roots LPs?
Might as well include LPs which have been reissued as this is about the originals.
I suppose the 12 Tribes Showcase on Orthodox might be one. Maybe John Holt's Up Park Camp on Channel One, Johnny Osbourne's Folly Ranking on Positive Sounds?
I would have brought this up on B&F but it seems to be the less about discussion and more about adverts these days.

How about Concrete Dub

The thing I find interesting is that there are some rare albums (such as Concrete Jungle Dub) that are truly rare but everybody knows about and then there are other albums that are so rare that they've slipped under the radar. These albums tend to be dub sets due to their limited pressings.
Thinking of the Clancy Eccles Sound System International dub album that I guess most people hadn't even heard about before it was on eBay selling for tons and tons of dallaz!
Ray Hurford mentioned he once saw a pre Now Gen in Dub LP some time in the 70's. Would love to hear that one. Dub for me still feels very mystical since there's always all of these rare and super obscure albums popping up that you've never heard about previously.

Totally agree Kalcidis, I was looking through Popsike & completed Ebay listings for roots stuff and its all dub LPs which brought in the big money, assuming that's an indication of rarity. Obviously quality is a different matter!
I thought I had a lot of dub LPs until I saw that king of Dub website. Some of these must have been quite limited pressings, many not even enough to warrant a cover, eg the E-Saw set.
I picked up Mighty Diamonds' Dubwise LP at the weekend, also with no cover. A Gussie set of dubs released in 1988 based on the Diamonds "Changes" LP from 1981 which is what got me thinking about it. Never seen it before.

The Changes Dubwise LP has a cover which is green I think and has three belt buckles or something similar on the front. GREAT dub LP. Would love to have it but haven't bothered to track it down. I wonder if that King of Dub website is the most complete dub collection out there.

Ringo The Mighty Diamonds "Dubwise" came out within a few months of the "Changes" LP in 1981. For years we had a dozen or so in the basement, as we used to distribute them here for a producer that worked closely with Gussie Clarke. If you want to trade something, send my a PM. But beware, it's a very pedestrian dub, very dry, no effects.....I wouldn't chase this one very far. IMO, "Changes" contained some of the Diamonds' worst vocals, their version of Johny Osbourne's "All I Have Is Love" is unsufferable.

No, different LP, although I don't have the Magnificent one.
Track listing of Up Park Camp:
Up Park Camp A Love I Can Feel Only A Smile Love Me Forever Why Can't I Touch You Change Your Style Maybe Some Day Stay At Home Have You Ever Been In Love Mr. Fix It
How do you link to a Roots Archives image, anyone?

You mean this one Ringo? I have this LP, picked it up for about a tenner a few years back from a 2nd hand stall on Spitalfields Market, obviously neither the seller nor me, until I read this thread, realised it was rare at all! My copy has the same picture sleeve as above, although there is a difference between the Channel One label on mine and the one in the photo, I'll do a scan of it this evening if you are interested.... Also is this the white label Delroy Wilson LP, that Penny also mentions...? ... which I remember Penny saying that although it says 'Pre-Release from Jamaica' on it, is in fact from Finsbury Park!

That's the Channel One LP Ian, not sure about the Delroy though, mine is a double LP on Third World so I'd guess not.
This kind of illustrates the point of the thread. If we've only ever seen them once or twice we assume they must be rare. I've always thought the Holt LP was rare but maybe lots of people have it.

That is not the Collins LP, Ian. The Collins album was issued circa 1973, lonf before DElroy had cut 'I'm Still Waiting'. The 'I'm Still Waiting' set was issued by EJI Records in Finsbury Park in 1977 to capitalise on the success of the single and to coincide with a Delroy Wilson tour of Britain. I also have the John Holt 'Up Park Camp' album but my label is different to yours. I bought my copy in 1976, from Roy Forbes of Hawkeye (before he had even started Hawkeye) if I remember correctly. That label on yours looks like it's a 1980s repress.

That wasn't my John Holt record Penny, I copied and pasted that one from Roots Archives. Here's the copy I have, which I then presume is the same as yours, without the original owners initials on it of course..... Ringo, it might well be rare, I bought it because I hadn't seen it before and it was in good nick and is a nice LP, and I don't think i've ever seen it for sale since. I just never realised I might have got a bargain...

The Channel One labels that are shown for the Up Park Camp LP look to be the labels that Jo Jo used for the UK press Channel One releases
By-the-way, here's the track listing for the "Channel One Presents The Magnificent John Holt"
Side one
1. Two Good To Be Forgotten 2. May Be Some Day 3. You And Your Smiling Face 4. A Love I Can Feel 5. Mr. Fix It
Side two
1. Midnight Cowboy 2. Love Me Forever 3. Ghetto Girl 4. Up Park Camp

Hey! Let's bump this old thread.
Some other very rare albums I wonder about. Any information on them? All UK releases.
Eric Clarke - Love That Grows & Grows (Baal). I've got another album on Baal by the UK-based roots group Eclipse (produced by Sidney Crooks) and it really is remarkable.
Rebels & Allies - Broken Heart (Brixton Sound). Only seen it once and it sounded quite sweet. Very expensive though. Who were they?
Sceptre - Essence Of Redemption (Gray Diamond) - The group was related to those Black Symbols and Handsworth Explosion-artists. But I know nothing of how the album sounds.

as "Sister Big stuff" was rereleased i hope the label will take care of this album soon .....

This one should be rare as it was never supposed to be sold only given to members. I think when it was making hundreds of bux on ebay someone looted some copies from HQ. there's a version on maroon vinyl as well. it's one of mt all time faves i like every cut. a

Kalcidis, can't help with any info on the Rebels- Broken Heart LP, but I do have a 7" on Brixton Sound that is the Rebels-Broking Heart and it's a nice track. I really like the dub on the flip. Would be interested to know if they had an lp. I believe it was produced by Bob Drumbago.

betterdayz, thanks for the link. I will check it as soon as I can. At the moment I'm repainting at home so everything (including TT and amp) is in boxes right now. Does it sound andy good? The song they had on the second Handsworth Explosion compilation was very nice if memory serves me right. Tough rhythm with a deejay on it (unless I'm thinking of another song on the comp.). Rasadam, It still is rare. I've been trying to buy it for some time but never had the luck. Much because I'm not in a position to put $100+ on one LP. Hamburger, Amen ... it was reissued some years ago. Quite crappy pressing. Personally I think this album is quite underrated in the sense that I've seen many rare dub album get more mentioning that are not nearly as good. This one is of the first and truly brilliant. jps, I'm not sure if I understand. But they did have an LP. The one I mention. It's a yellow sleeve with a photo of them

I picked up Mighty Diamonds' Dubwise LP at the weekend, also with no cover. A Gussie set of dubs released in 1988 based on the Diamonds "Changes" LP from 1981 which is what got me thinking about it. Never seen it before. Dubwise came out almost immediately after Changes, not in 88, rather 82 or 83. I bought it the day it arrived at the store way back when.

The beauty of Reggae is that there are always people whose opinion of an album or a song is totally 100% opposite of yours. I personally LOVE that album and enjoy the dubs that dry way, because they really emphasize the drum and bass without resorting to tricks like special effects, and formulaic gimmicks that had become the norm way back when.

I personally rate it a lot higher than the rebels and allies album. Got several tracks of essence of redemption here on my computer. Some are very experimental and far away from mainstream (guess that it is why it is rare) Would love to have it though. The only track I like from that rebels and allies LP is poverty people which also came on a 12" (same cut) www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCcRAdGjHDcRebels and allies. There were some detailed threats about it on B&F or roots-archives in the past. Bob Drumbago performs as a street musician on London subway stations these days if I'm not mistaken. Another rare record:
