Bought the double pack edition with the Kieran Evans "The Outer Edge" DVD. Not watched it yet but after seeing his video for "The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers" I'm looking foward to it

Not sooo much regards N-raotday,
BUT, yesterday evenink saw a phenomenal performance by Terry *superlungs* Reid at the Borderline, Londinium, resplendent in his attire of clothes!
Silver White Light, Seed Of Memory, River & Don't Know Why amongst others, with the brilliant BJ Cole supplementing on steel guitar, this was the 2nd of 2 performances previous Thursday evenink playing solo, but yesterday [Friday] with full band who were excellent, especially the female bass player & female brass player.
Brilliant gig, Apparently he is gigging again Londinium in September 2013, miss him at your peril!
Peace Gp

Thanks for the advance notice of the Sept gigs mmike56.
I really rate Terry Reid - the recent "Live in London" 2 CD set is mostly fab.

Not only one of the greatest electronic albums of all time, its one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years, period. This album is latter day Drive By Truckers, America's best rock'n'roll'n'country'n'soul band by a mile imo. Up later

I always thought the Boys were one of those punk bands (like the Vibrators,Eddie & The Hot Rods, the Lurkers...) who released some great singles but didn't have enough strong tracks to make up a decent album. They also made a Christmas album as The Yobs which is truly shite. My choices for today have been - Amon Duul II - Live In London V/A - I'r Brawd Hwdini (Meic Stevens tribute album) Motorhead - Bastards

I give you off the top of my head The Cure Buzzcocks The Jam The Specials New Order The Smiths The Associates Siouxie and the Banshees Echo and The Bunnymen The Undertones Human League Orange Juice The only band who consistently made great albums and singles from the punk days onwards, and for over at least a ten year period are the best British band ever - The Fall.

I used punk bands as an example Roland because with the obvious exceptions a lot of them were thrown together quickly to cash in on what was happening & their sets were 25% killers,75% fillers. I can't say I agree with most of your list of bands that didn't make great albums but it did get me thinking of album tracks that should have been singles, so for a start off I give you
Echo & The Bunnymen - Viliers Terrace The Clash - Spanish Bombs John Cooper Clarke - 36 Hours Undertones - She's A Runaround

Ok I'll see your Spanish Bombs and I'll raise you Clampdown.
On the great albums, I did say "few if any", I wasn't implying they didn't make any. I just think that given their stature in British music folklore most of these bands compilation albums probably stand taller than their albums. The biggest culprits probably being The Smiths and New Order. I love New Order, but I found most of their albums to be frustratingly under par. The first album is a train wreck, perhaps understandably. Power,C & Lies just seemed to be a bunch of tracks with the Blue Monday blueprint at their heart. Lowlife, mostly great but with a few clunkers and Brotherhood I found to be terrible. Their great album was Technique, where they just timed a bunch of fantastic songs with the climate of rave, and Madchester, and the club scene almost to perfection. Some might argue they had actually missed that boat by a few years, but the songs were still top drawer. Probably against the grain, but I reckon the final Smiths album is their masterpiece. Their other albums suffered from terrible production, or in the case of The Queen Is Dead, an album with too many tracks that had already been released and a band obviously sticking to what by then had become a tired formula. Strangeways Here We Come was taking The Smiths into lots of new directions at least. Of the other bands I listed, I don't see any of them that made a great album. A few came close of course, and it's all subjective anyway isn't it?

Over on the Drive By Truckers messageboard they are discussing each of their albums, on a weekly basis, and this week it is the turn of (one of) their masterpiece(s), The Dirty South. www.threedimesdown.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5415Each week a different member of the messageboard is given the privilege of writing the main article, recalling their thoughts about the album, then everybody else can chime in. These guys really know their stuff, and their writings are of a pretty decent standard.

One of the very best British albums from the 80's, but still manages to only be about the 5th best Fall album in that decade. Nobody could touch The Fall in that decade imo.

Today, while doing a bit of tidying up, I listened to John Grant's lovely new album "Pale Green Ghosts". On pale green vinyl too!
