For me it must be Sebadoh "Bakesale" which helped me no end doing one of my less favourite tasks - washing the dishes Great combination of noisy distortion guitars & beautiful harmonys

For me it simply must be the various artists album "Discotheque 71" which contains old Guinean hits (originally released on Syliphone, reissued on cd on Syllart/Mélodie). Great stuff apparently unavailable anywhere else.
Includes, among other treats, the absolutely incredible "Solo Quintette" by Myriam's Quintette. A boogaloo jam with what I guess could be a kora or a kamalen n'goni as a solo instrument... Never heard of them or any other tune by them...

Curtis Mayfields Superfly has always been one of my absolute favourite albums. The album Forca Bruta by Jorge Ben is bubbling beneath.

Toumani Diabate's Mande Songs album, quite easily one of the best albums I've heard in years, and probably for years to come. What a fabulous piece of music from the Malian Kora genius! BTW Skunky, I'm off to see Sebadoh here in Paris next month, been a fan for a long time, and great to see a reformed group playing again, as long as Lou Barlow lays off the liquor for the gig ;0)

Nigeria Special comp. on Soundway - getting raves all over, might make an African music head out of me yet. I got vol. 2 on LP - monster grooves, superb early 70s sound, heavy basslines...love it...

Yes, the man like Grumpy lent me the Nigeria Special 2xCD on Soundway, and last night I finally listened to the first disc and had to order it straight away for myself.
Very good, and very subtle - I have a stereotype in my head of Nigerian music as percussive dance and this broke that mould whilst having plenty of funky stuff in there too.

...I recall you dropping one or two tracks from this at last MIU!, Baldy mate Yes indeed Zap and its still ringing my bell. The sequel has a Martha reeves and the Vandellas track called 'Easily persuaded' which I'm loving at the moment and which seems a likely candidate for the next MIU! Dave - I would be interested to read your opinion of the other two sequels. Respects Baldy

I will post when they arrive (though I worn you, I don't know a damn thing about funk music...just like it)- I doubt they can fail after these two. Love Listen Here- That is a great tune. I think the high point for me is Honey and The Bees Love Addict, That Martha tune (off "Return")...and I love the vocal delivery on "My Heart Took A Licking" - Millie Jackson and Tell Me Whats Wrong"- Lynn Varnado off the first.

OK- I am sure we have all had one of these. That song that has to be played at the exact right moment to really make you understand it? Sorry to go on and on about this comp, but that song RIGHT NOW is: Sunshine Of Your Love- Spanky Wilson- Funk Soul Sisters Normally I would not have payed it much attention, but random play brought it to my ears at just the right time ...Euphoria! OK- Off this now- Non Reggae Album Of The Day for the Cloverdale Division Given the name this boy got donned with, it is not surprising that he has fleshed out a good one at 25 (even less of a surprise that he has already "recovered" from abusing substances). Anyway, I know Steve Earle is not everyones cup of tea...this has probably one song that I can safely say Steve had a big hand in, and it's a ballad. The rest- Folksy string work, Bakersfield sound country/Honky Tonk dating from the early sixties, a little Cajun....a ripping Steel Guitar. If any of you have ever had an inclination to listen to American Country Music...this would be a good start. Standouts so far for me are What Do You Do When Your Lonesome (could be that it is Buck Owens Close Up The Honky-Tonks...it's on 'dat riddim ) and Hard Livin' which sounds a lot like the Old Crow Medicine Show if any of you are familiar. Cheers- TCK

Drove up to Belfast yesterday as my other half wanted to do some shopping. Bought some CD's for the first time ina couple of years. Currently enjoying " New York Dolls". Had forgotten just how good Jet Boy, Looking for a kiss, Frankenstein and Trash sounded. Big up Arthur "Killer" Kane.
