.... has to be Rock. It has ruled for decades and only recently seems to be challenged and overtaken by any other genre - notably Hip Hop. Usually not very impressive Hip Hop, unfortunately. Yes, never mind any specific artist, my main issue with modern music has been this championing of Rock over every other genre. It isn't better or any more relevant than everything else. I'm tired of reading these 100 best album lists, obviously compiled by would-be broadminded rock journos which make token gestures towards black music with the inclusion of the likes of Mile's "A Kind Of Blue" and Marvin's "What's Goin' On" way down the list. This just re-inforces for m e the misconception that black folks have made 'a few' good albums but nothing to touch Lennon/ McCarney or Radiohead. F**k 'em! War on the bullshit! Respect militant Freddy.

Freddy has hit the nail on the head.
What passes for "rock" these days is complete regurgitations of what was vital in the 70's and early 80's. Difference now is that it is all overproduced.
And as for those critic's lists - I think a true "Best of" list of any given year can only be produced three or more years down the road.
I mean, do these critic types still listen to the bands they were championing back in 2001?

And as for those critic's lists - I think a true "Best of" list of any given year can only be produced three or more years down the road. Now that's an interesting idea but .... .... can you imagine the reactions of people when they buy those "Year In Review" issues and find that the "year" in question is rather out of date.
