Queen - I kind of like Queen Coldplay - music is boring, lifeless and "anti-septic" - i've never met them Robbie Williams - decent enough entertainer, musically over-hyped middle-of-the-road dullness Status Quo - they were over-rated, never highly rated Queen - our house (wife, 2 daughters and myself - and 2 pet ducks) is musically and mercifully Queen-free ;D ;D These are the sorts of bands that, when I hear them, make me reach for the "Off" switch or change the TV channel!!!

Me too. I've been a musical snob since I was old enough to change the channel... and there's no reason to stop now.
As a kid, growing up in Canada where there's a government enforced quota that ensures a high percentage of all music on the radio is Canadian, this became the only possible response.
I mean, in this country, the Guess Who are talked about in the same hushed tones reserved for The Beatles... this for a group that had a couple of hits and one best selling album 35 years ago!!

Guess Who!!! Notable (for me) for the original of Nicky Thomas's "Lonely Feeling" and originally called "No Sugar Tonight" - their UK hit "American Woman", plus they did a decent version of "These Eyes"

Neil Young is not overrated...
Granted, every time he plays an all accoustic song it makes me cringe, but "Rust Never Sleeps" and "Ragged Glory" give him a free pass as far as I'm concerned.
Have to agree with Bedward on Queen (pure crud) and Neil Diamond (pure schmaltz).

This is one of those threads that could be almost endless. When is an artist or group overrrated? And when does it come as a result of hype / payola? When there seemed to be hype about the artist everywhere you looked and subsequently they didn't stand the test of time (however long that is) it would appear that they must have been overrated .... but you can make a few great records and then disappear. If an organ like the NME won't shut up about them, they could well be overrated. If you can't walk around your town or city without hearing their music they could be overrated .... or it could just be hype. When the media machine convinces a sizeable chunk of the masses that a band is good (when they are totally without merit - eg 'The Corrs') then that band must be overrated. When, a few years down the line, noboby will admit to having liked them (eg Spice Girls) mustn't they have been overrated? Bob Marley may be overrated by the mainstream but could similarly be underrated by a reggae snob. (Not you, Baldy! .... I saw his name on your list ). Everyone gets overrated or underrated by some group of people at some time. Here are 4 (x4 ) that I consider to be ludicrously overrated: Radiohead Andy Weatherall that whole 'Madchester' thing 2Pac 50 Cent Dr Dre Snoop Dog Destiny's Child Usher Dizzy Rascal Pink Floyd Duran Duran (some people seem take them seriously!) Pearl Jam Genesis Eric Clapton Missy Elliott

Zapatoo seems to have the handle on this sort of thing. His nominations are hard to fault. Oh, and I don't mind a bit of Neil Young either! Joy Division were fine but New Order fell off badly somewhere in their career, IMO.

Bob Marley may be overrated by the mainstream but could similarly be underrated by a reggae snob. (Not you, Baldy! .... I saw his name on your list ). Don't get me wrong - there's some excellent BMW - but there's so much airtime and so many column inches dedicated to Bob that many must surely believe that if they buy 'Legend' they have the best reggae there is - they are the biggest hits of reggae's biggest star after all. I fell into this trap to an extent too way back. I had just a few reggae records including 'Legend'. I thought 'Legend' was quite good - still do, but because I believed the hype and figured that this must be the best that the genre had to offer, I didn't bother digging much deeper for a while. I bet there are loads more people that would love the raw and powerful sound of the reggae we all love if they, like me, were lucky enough to dig a little deeper. And I bet that if Bob's 'Legend' type output were not the be all and and all in terms of the airplay and the column inches I mentioned, then a lot of people would be finding different and (I would argue) more interesting routes into reggae. Respect Baldy

.... I'm tired of reading these 100 best album lists, obviously compiled by would-be broadminded rock journos which make token gestures towards black music with the inclusion of the likes of Mile's "A Kind Of Blue" and Marvin's "What's Goin' On" way down the list. This just re-inforces for m e the misconception that black folks have made 'a few' good albums but nothing to touch Lennon/ McCarney or Radiohead. F**k 'em! War on the bullshit! Respect militant Freddy. Yes - thats what I was trying to say only much more eloquently put by you. Thanks militant Freddy. Respect Baldy

How about an overrated music writer? Just finished Chuck Klosterman's new tome - and boy is it lousy. Luckily, it was from the library so it didn't cost me anything. Anyone is entitled to their opinion, but when a guy admits to owning 26 KISS cds and then goes on to say that he hates the Blues... well, the book magically flew across the room at that point.

Zapatoo seems to have the handle on this sort of thing. His nominations are hard to fault. ...but maybe because it's a handle you can grasp comfortably too, Freddy Us all having different views is what makes life, music and message boards like this so interesting. Regarding what defines "over-rated" - isn't it a feeling gained by all that one has read, heard and seen about an artist/band or anything else for that matter? A bit difficult to define...and I'm reminded of an occasional series in Blues & Soul back in the early to mid-70s where readers were invited to write an article under the heading "My Idea of Soul"... - everyone's idea of "Soul" based on the musical sense, was pretty much different ferom another's

Neil Young rocks though.

Most British rock-pop bands are massively overrated. The list is virtually endless. Even the Rolling Stones and the Beatles are weak compared with the rhythm and blues originals they were ripping off the other side of the water.
The most overrated of the last decade must be Oasis - being nothing but a hideous parody of all worst moments of the Beatles... in fact, Oasis were worse than that. All their songs are sub football anthems, designed entirely to be sung by inebriated jingoistic idiots. Robbie Williams is by far the worst solo artist of recent times, his song 'Angels' being a contendor for one of the most evil records ever unleashed on the gullible public, although he does have a certain performative charisma which I guess detracts from his otherwise dismal voice and gauche, cliched lyrics.
