Have to agree with those recommendations. While you're at it why not pick up a copy of "Hardcore '81" by Vancouver's own D.O.A. ??

Much appreciated guys, now would either of you recommend "Family Man"? It's available at my local second hand shoppe on vinyl, original press, for 20 bucks <CDN.>

If my memory serves me well Family Man is a half-instrumental/half-spoken word album. I mean one side is instrumental and one is spoken word. I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for it. If you are into that "kinda weird" era of Black Flag get Slip It In or In My Head LP's. Otherwise, you can't get wrong with Everything Went Black - a nice compilation of pre-Rollins recordings. PS While you're at it why not pick up anything by San Pedro's finest - The Minutemen?

Don't know about "Family Man" but The Minutemen's "Double Nickels On The Dime" is darn good.

Pretty much everything I've listened to other than Damaged, First Four Years and Everything Went Black was a disappointment (especially those "weird period" albums that gd mentions). As others have said, buy anything by labelmates The Minutemen with confidence, the three Post-Mersh volumes and Double Nickels on the Dime are all great.
SST was a very good label . . . between the Minutemen, Husker Du, Black Flag, the Descendants (or at least some of their work, they could be a bit whiny for my taste), early Meat Puppets, and Bad Brains their output made up a substantial chunk of my high school listening material. Of course, after discovering Bad Brains it wasn't long before I became a hopeless reggae addict.

Husker Dü and The Descendents are some of the greatest punchy melody purveyors of all times, imho. errr, a notable exception being HD's first album ! the first Meat Puppets was also very unusually good, too bad they got recognition when their style turned into something much more typically "american mainstream rock". Minutemen is a band i haven't heard for ages, very good technical music but i always found it hard to listen to a whole album in a row.
