I heard a Henry Cow tune the other day. I can't believe that I used to take this muck seriously. Fully agree with Ali and Rubba. Horrible.

Actually, I'd recommend Archie Shepp's A Poem For Malcom LP on BYG Actuel. My favorite Free Jazz release.

It's the highly improvised, avant garde end of that music you love to hate, Ali. Don't check any of the following artists: Ornette Coleman Albert Ayler Pharaoh Sanders Art Ensemble of Chicago Sun Ra Don Cherry Instead break yourself in very gently with something by Jazz Jamaica. Sod this, I think I'll listen to Pharoah Sanders' "Tauhid" and Don Cherry's "Multi Kulti" and "Brown Rice" tomorrow. There's more to life than Jamdung and friggin' Dean Fraser.

There's certainly more to life than Dean Frazer but Don Cherry is not it.

What does avant garde mean?? Is it French for shit or something? Ah, the blessed sound of juvenile ignorance! Brings back my balmy blinkered youth! Think of free jazz as heavy metal, with saxophones instead of guitars, and a drummer who can count beyond 4 (or 2, depending).

Do Rip Rig & Panic count as "Free Jazz"? The band I mean, rather than the tune they named themselves after (well, and that too, I suppose). I quite like Rip Rig & Panic. More so now than when they were current. My favourite Rip Rig & Panic tune is probably "Try Box Out Of This Box" from the "God" double LP
