There was a time - a long time ago - when I was as big an Elvis Costello fan as there was. "The Juliet Letters" marked a sudden end to that passion, and though I've tried to like what he's been up to the last 15 years or so, it all strikes me as just so much mediocrity.
Sad.
BUT - I did crank up "Big Tears" when I saw this thread. And it's a great tune.

Oh, soccer. Almost as boring as cricket. I thought you chaps called it football? Myself, I'm a big foosball fan. That's kinda like soccer but you have to be drunk to play.
If I had to be a soccer fan I would probably follow the Tottenham Hotspurs just because it sounds so British! I suppose they 'suck' as we like to say over here.

Far from it, Jim - Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur) are currently 4th in the English Premier League - the highest they've been for a number of years. Recently fielded 5 players for England (against Uruguay): - Paul Robinson (GK)
- Ledley King (D / M)
- Michael Carrick (M)
- Jermaine Jenas (M)
- Jermaine Defoe (S)
...though, apart from Ledley King, all players were bought from elsewhere... www.soccerbase.com/league2.sd?competitionid=1

"Watching the detectives" does it any time for me! And his chelsea song is another fave...

...and his "Almost Blue" album from 1981 is almost unreservedly recommended.
I only say "almost unreservedly" because I'm not a great EC fan, but this one works exceptionally well for me...

anything beyond Punch the Clock is pretty dodgy in my book I'd say, anything after King of America... although Spike had a couple of good tunes. Everything else has sounded like a bad singer experimenting or showing off. Great thing about music - I can go put on "Get Happy", and hey - Elvis is good again. Elvis Tune of the day - "High Fidelity"

everyday i write the book!
Anyone see the video compilation of Elvis Costello just released? Features some great videos of Oliver's Army, Radio Radio, Watching the Detectives. After awhile the constant use of white screen does get to you.

Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes
Only the first couple of albums were consistently great. Same with Graham Parker.
Saw Elvis in a small club in Chicago right after the second album came out. Two shows of 45 minutes each. Back to back hits. Never stopped, never talked to the audience. Finished, walked off, no encore. Angry young man to the max. Great tunes but alot of people were pissed it was over so soon.
I was in on a free pass so I thought it was pretty cool myself. Steve Naive was the perfect sideman for Elvis.
Those were great days! Specials, Madness, Ian Dury, T Heads. Ramones, X, et al.

Pump it Up! - still one of the most unique tunes around. (Watching the Detectives was a close second)
