Is it a cover version or original?

I think it's a Sly original gd - but I'll have to check the single (U.K. Direction 58 4279 - 1969) later when I get home... The Covers Project website didn't help: coversproject.com/artist/sly%20and%20the%20family%20stoneI think Winston Francis covered it on his "California Dreaming" LP (UK Bamboo - BDLP216 - 1970) - I'm sure it's the same one on there...

The originals credit on 1969 album Stand! goes for S. Stewart which means Sly Stone is the original composer.
Which reminds me of a sad recent miscredit on non-Jamaican label. On 2005's Monty Alexander album "Live At The Iridium" they do a wonderful cover of Bob Marley's Running Away. However the CD credits the songs as being penned by Sly Stone. Sly has a song by title but this song and Bob marley's are completely different. What made a company like Telarc credit it to wrong writer beats me. It seems they can do this outside of Jamaica as well :-)
