What terrible news. I'll never forget seeing him in concert by the Lake here in Toronto. A transcendental experience - the guy was a masterful musician.

Shocked to read this. I was supposed to go to see him when he played in Belfast about 8 years ago but unfortunately never made it. This is a site I check which gets updated frequently: thedeadrockstarsclub.com/2006.html

RIP...and an African Serenades set is surely needed to emphasise his impact... I'll be spinning the recent In the Heart of the Moon and his set with Ry Cooder this afternoon

Bedward (or any other expert): I love Ali's "Talking Timbuktu" and "Niafunke". I like "Red and Green". Where should I go next?

The recent collaboration with Toumani Diabate is highly recommended. I also have radio mali which doesn't get as much rotation as Talking Timbuktu and In the Heart of the Moon.

What sad news, another great man down.
I have been enjoying the "Niafunké" album a lot lately, and that collaboration album with Toumani Diabaté looks like a great set too. In the latest Songlines mag there is a four star review of a documentary DVD about him. Will have to look out for that too...

holy shit, thats sad news.
in some ways, good that he recorded the recent disc with diabate. his already rich leagacy is left much the richer for it.
he featured in "feel like going home", one of the scorsese "blues" documentaries. i was amazed and impressed at how regal he seemed in and around niafunke (where had had recently been elected mayor).
rosko, i second the recomendation for "in the heart of the moon". its sublime. although i don't have it, "the source" also gets good reviews.
