Are "Cannibal Corpse" black metal? I think it's Norway that is a centre of activity for this stuff. I remember that leader of one of the bands who is a cult figure and a neo-nazi is doing time for murdering someone (his ex-buddie?) from a rival band. I think he called himself Hieronymus. Sorry about the lack of specifics.

“Black Metal is so extreme that not anyone can get into it. This isn’t any funny hobby which stupid kids shall have after they come home from school.” – Euronymous interviewed in Norwegian magazine, 1993
The story of the short, bloody reign of Black Metal in Norway is a cautionary tale to anyone who underestimates the extremes to which youth cults can drive themselves. It developed out of the Death Metal scene; but in the isolation of northern Scandinavia what had been a fun, tongue-in-cheek sub-genre (with its cartoon-horror lyrics and light-speed drumming) mutated swiftly into something far more unpleasant. Rejecting the perceived commercialisation of Death Metal, proto-Black Metallers began donning corpse makeup and adopting a nihilistic attitude that would soon have repercussions outside of Norwegian teen bedrooms.
Two charismatic figures dominated the emergence of the Black Metal scene. Euronymous, born Oystein Aarseth, was guitarist in Norway’s most extreme metal band, a band more discussed than heard whose rare stage shows involved self-mutilation and pigs’ heads on stakes. Shortly after the suicide-by-shotgun in 1991 of their lead singer (the self-named “Dead”, pieces of whose skull were distributed amongst favoured scene-members by Aarseth) Aarseth, with his mothers funding, opened his record shop Helvete (“Hell”) in Oslo. The shop provided a centre for a growing network of pale-faced teenagers across Norway, previously only in contact through fanzines and letter-writing, who were following the burgeoning development of a specifically Norwegian version of Death Metal with interest.
One such youth, Varg Vikernes (soon to become infamous as Count Grisnackh), was to play a lead role in galvanising this loose movement. His solo project Burzum brought him to the attention of Aarseth, the hoarse, demonic screaming and impressively evil ambiance ripe for release on Aarseth’s Deathlike Silence label. Vikernes began staying in Helvete’s basement during his Oslo visits. It was possibly his influence on Aarseth that moved the scene in a more serious direction. Before, the trappings and imagery of Satanism had simply been an expression of teen rebellion, a continuation of a long-standing tradition in Heavy Metal. Now a more concrete anti-Christianity was emerging, with a more defined intent. Soon the kids wouldn’t be content to hang around a record shop in pale make-up: to prove themselves, they would need to act.
The church-burnings began in 1992. As a way to strike against Christianity they were obvious and direct. They also had the effect of bringing the Black Metal scene to the attention of the mainstream media, exactly the kind of hysterical attention the protagonists presumably wanted. Always on the look out for juicy stories about the occult and devil worship, the Norwegian press seized on teenage Black Metallers’ pyromania as proof of the existence of an organised cult. In fact they were almost certainly the acts of individuals or small groups, trying to prove their evil credentials. Nevertheless, over the next 3 years around forty blazes were connected with Black Metal, and Varg Vikernes was widely believed to be responsible for several of them.
As shocking as the arsons were, events would soon take an even darker turn. Bard Eithun, drummer in the band Emperor, stabbed a man to death on 21st August 1992. The motive was at least partly homophobic (Black Meatl always leaning towards far-right politics); it was also no doubt a result of the growing atmosphere of violence in the scene. Eithun wasn’t suspected for several months. In the interim, he gained notoriety and kudos in the community that gathered in Helvete.
Almost a year after this murder, Oystein Aarseth was found dead in his aprtment building, also from multiple stab wounds. To the shock of all, Varg Vikernes was arrested as the killer. The motives are unclear; money was probably involved, and there had certainly been a battle for dominance in at the top of the Black Metal hierarchy, at least in Vikernes’ head. Whatever the reasons, this murder proved to be the climax of the crime spree. Vikernes, aged 21, was sentenced to 21 years in jail for this and his involvement in church burnings. Eithun, caught in the aftermath of the Aarseth investigation, got 14 years. The church burnings gradually petered out.
Although Black Metal bands continued (and continue still) to release records, the scene had it was had effectively been killed. Vikernes renounced it as juvenile, turning to Norwegian and paganism instead. Still much adored by many fans, his most recent records have been instrumental, synth-based works. In October 2003 he was swiftly recaptured after an escape attempt, reportedly carrying a gas mask, knives, camouflage clothing, a portable Global Positioning System satellite navigator, maps, a compass, a mobile telephone, a headset and a laptop computer. It would seem he still has his followers.

Fret not Rosko, you can always catch Catholic Bukkake here in Toronto. But I wouldnt' advise it.
I don't like to pigeon-hole bands or make assumptions of musical genres without knowing the details but death metal all sounds the same to these ears! That is, discomforting and painful.

Yep, I normally try to keep my ears open for most musical genres, but I really can live easily without any metal music ;D
And all those sub genres are ridiculous. But the funny thing is, I really tried to listen to Napalm Death years ago and they played so fast, that on the hand they really must be skilled on their instruments (with no groove at all!) and the singer could only grunt to follow the band. They were to fast for his voice, that must have been "speed metal".

Glad I'm getting older, no one I know wants to drag me along to a "Catholic Bukkake" concert. Glad I'm getting older - I feel no need to pretend to like crap anymore. Although I've heard that the double live "Pungent Stench" CD is pretty good.

I'm no expert ( I can take about 5 minutes of the stuff at a time) but many of the bands that are identified as black metal are not particularly into the whole norse mythology thing.
I really should have listed Cephalic Carnage in there somewhere.

I'm finished with that. I have reached a cleaner level where not only the lyrics are Germanic, but also the music". This cleaner level of conciuosness also means Vikernes is now actively supporting the "race" theories once developed by one Adolf Hitler. Slim chances, then, of a death metal version of "Young, Gifted And Black" done in Norwegian. Respect Funky D

I'm interested in how and why he had such an extreme influence on so many youths in Norway.

maybe some hope for a dance metal cover, then?like Old, Lame and White ? as for Napalm Death and all those grind bands, i saw some live and you couldn't see what the drummer was doing as it seemed to be like pushing the fast forward button : all blurred! as for the ND vocalist, fret not brother Ekki, the truth must be told : he had at least two sound effects pedals connected to his mic, so no worry:these are the risks of modern technology!

Sunn O))) (it's splet with the brackets) are a new band, theyr'e a bit like black metal but for New York hipsters. They are worth seeing live, very very slow and doomy with extremely big bass amplifiers. Also they flood the venue with dry ice so you can't see more than a metre in front of you, it's quite an experience. For their last album they drafted in an american death metal sunger who's agoraphobic and got him to sing whilst sealed in a coffin.

I'm interested in how and why he had such an extreme influence on so many youths in Norway. Not "so many youths" - it's just that they become very visible if they arson the local church! If you're really interested I can start a thread in English at the local hardcore punk message board, then you can join in and ask as many questions as you like. Just give me the word. Respect Funky D

What I meant by "so many" wasn't that there were millions of followers... I meant more that for such an esoteric, unglamorous, ugly and generally inaccessible scene, it got a surprising amount of teenagers heavily involved, to the extent of church burning etc. I wonder if it tapped into something resonant at the time, ie a sociological reason, or if it was purely the charisma of the scene-leaders (like Vikernes), ie a psychological reason. Of course I guess it was a combination. I've chatted to some Norwegian friends who were just into the music without getting sucked in to any scene, though.
