Thanks Gordy! Can you list a few more essentials from this early soul / R&B era?
The 5 Royals "Think" was played on the BBC2 James Brown interview and it got me thinking I need to hear more from this period.....

Well Ray Charles' early stuff is top notch but well documented. I'd go for stuff by The Fiestas, The Clovers, Little Willie John, Hank Ballard to name but a few who had a foot either side of the soul/R&B line.
More recommendations to come when I'm not thinking off the top of my head!

The Dominoes, early Ike Turner, Ruth Brown. There's a very good box set called 'We're Gonna Rock' or something like just come out on Proper, only £14-15. Includes loads of good stuff

What are (is) Monkey Hips and Rice?
I am literally picturing a plate of unidentifiable bone-in meat <with a bit of charred hair on the outside> laid over a bed of pilaf rice. I hope I am way off the mark here....

Grilled chicken with a hearty plate of black beans and seasoned rice covered with melted jack, scallions and salsa with seasoned toast and a side order of sour cream. Apparently.
