Or under-represented?
I should hold back but I can deliver the following ideas;
- A Zimbabwe special - Avant Garde and Free Jazz - South African Punk and Post Punk
..... I think we need Mikey Mike aka Lone Groover and some others to deliver

I don't have any idea what's missing from the series because I don't have any of them ....
.... but if any of the usual suspects would like to rectify this PM me and I can trade you back with some African, Brazilian, Jamaican, 60s-70s-80s or Neo- Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz or anything else I may have.
Back to the original question - has there been any Kwaito in the series yet?

Not yet...I fear the already excellent Sterns and Trikont comps together with the Yiko Yiko soundtrack cds will do the trick

how about "serenades" as originally conceived, i.e. instrumentals only.
i'd like to do that myself, but my damn nero doesn't let me compile tracks!!

Now I though serenades were simply slow quiet and beautiful songs which is why the first one I did is in that vein...
I don't get the instrumental bit...

your obviously right about a serenade bedders. however the "jamaican serenades" and "soul serenades" compilations, which preceded the "african serenades" series, featured only instrumental tracks.
not that there's anything wrong with the selection of (vocal) tracks on the african serenades off course.

Must admit I've not really followed a theme when compiling mine. Just picked tunes I liked. Have already got the opening track for my next volume. It's by Abdel Aziz el Mubarek from Sudan and contains a cracking tenor sax solo from Hamid Osman Abdalla (who coincidentally was the guy blowing away the cobwebs on the Abdel Gadir Salim track - Umri Ma Bensa - on vol 4 - and in my humble/pompous opinion, one of the best hornsmen on the continent, not that I'm intimate with the work of that many).
There's a guy called Gunkie from USA on the B&F board who I'm sending a set of the serenades to who says he'ld like to compile a volume from Ghanaian and Nigerian stuff he's got on vinyl. Have encouraged him to do so, in which case that might be vol 15. Will keep you updated on this.

A mate of mine in Australia spent a few years teaching in the (then) newly liberated Zimbabwe. Tony has a great selection of early 80s stuff that probably hasn't been anthologised on the Earthworks and other Zimbabwean CD re-issues. I have asked him to contribute a volume...he said he's looking into it....

Bedders, just like to say, I've been thoroughly enjoying Vol.11, the South African jazz comp, this evening. A great selection of inventive, funky jazz.
I've now got Mrs Bedders Vol. 3 playing. Lovely stuff! :-)
Many thanks, (and to Grumps for sending them my way)
Ian
