In another thread I mentioned the Smithsonion's 4-disc box set "The Blues," of which I never tire. I'd say it must be my favorite box-set.

the complete Stax-Volt singles black box (never found the two others) Johnny Taylor: Lifetime. some r'n'b comps on a Sanctuary satellite label, hits put together according to their year of release. a stunning 16-cd box set of old r'n'b chestnuts, some discs are chronological ,others have a special theme. It was on sale at 20 euros but the supplies were very limited.

Johnny Cash - Unearthed
This box is unreasonably expensive, almost a whole disc is already released stuff, but disc one has some great moments, and disc two is very fine. The last disc, which is basically a "best-of" from the American Records releases, does feature an alternative version of "Thirteen," with an additional verse.

The R&B Box: 30 Years of Rhythm & Blues put out by Rhino. Unfortunately it looks to be discontinued but it really turned me on to some fantastic music.
Unaware of the Nick Drake box-set. I thought he only released two albums in his short time on earth?

Ironwill he actually released three while alive and one was release relatively soon postumously (until recently when a few other have appeared) The original 4 Lp box set was later followed up by a cd box set of the same name. Rykodisc is where they used to be, I don't know if Island drew in their option on his material though.
Anyway, the Lps were/are
Five Leaves Left Bryter Layter Pink Moon Time of No Reply (posthumous)
Also two others, Way To Blue an Introduction to nick Drake on Island and another Lp I can't recall the title of, plus i think there was a recent authorised release of basically an old bootleg tape that did the rounds that had other bedroom takes, same ones as the posthumous release and also radio interview/posthumous interview with John Martyn. I havn't actually heard this, just heard a while back that it was coming out from a mutual fan.
As you can tell I was once a very big fan, bought everything he did as Lps, then gave them away to spread the word, bought the box set on Lp, gave that away to spread the word and bought the cd set. this was during the first flicker of re-interest in him in the late 80s.
Time of no reply is a collection of tunes that never made it to disc, bedroom demos and bootlegs. Includes the tune 'Been Smokin' Too Long'

Nope but if it is any help, there is a lot of Lomax senior and Junior and other Lomax team members projects on Library of Congress recordings, the smithsonian institue has some interesting music on it's site too, including Mento and the like.. www.folkways.si.edu/index.html

Thanks for the info bmd.
I only got into Nick Drake after viewing the documentary 'A Skin Too Few' (which was shown by the educational television station i work at) sometime last year.
I was blown away by the severity and depth of his music for a man so young. Not sure if your familiar with the doc but Nick's sister plays a piece of music recorded by their mother on the piano that is so haunting it still gives me chills thinking about it.

yes I think I've seen that,. Joe Boyd is interviewed on it too I think. Gabrelle Drake his Sister was/is a reasonably well known UK actress who was once on the old soap Opera, now long gone, Crossroads. That song his mother sings, that they play on the little tape recorder/player is wonderfully dark isn't it.. like a slightly un-hinged Noel Coward song or something, it was a revalation when I first heard that on a bootleg, all the sudden Nick's music made perfect sense. One of the strangest things though was hearing his soft and upper class accent/voice for the first time, his speaking voice was nothing like, for whatever reason I thought he would sound like.....
