Dear undergrounders
I recently got hold of 'I've got my own hell to raise' by Betty Lavette.
I think its ok but imo its not a patch on 'Let me down easy' - the only other track I have by her. So what should I buy to get more like this.
Thanks and respect for any advice
Baldy

Hi Baldy, Here's one which currently lurks on my infinitely sizeable wants list: tinyurl.com/dsrjkI could definitely recommend "Nearer to You" on CD (Charly, 1991) probably long since deleted which has the following: 1. He Made a Woman Out of Me 2. Do Your Duty 3. We Got to Slip Around 4. Piece of My Heart 5. Easier to Say (Than Do) 6. My Train's Comin' In 7. At the Mercy of a Man 8. Let Me Down Easy 9. Games People Play 10. Nearer to You 11. Love's Made a Fool of Me 12. I'm in Love 13. Let's Go, Let's Go,Let's Go 14. Feelings 15. Shoestring 1-12 were put out as a vinyl album "I'm in Love" in 1986. Looking at Bettye's website, most of these date from 1970. Probably hard to track down but my CD burner is in service if necessary.

i havnt heard the casualeers tune for years, i might have to invest one love rubba ...excellent tune - there was also a proto-Disco version (produced by Tony Bongiovi and Meco Monardo) by Liquid Smoke - hi-hats and all - from 1975

There is an awesome Betty Lavette tune called Your Turn To Cry on Atlantic - it crops up on the odd comp and it is a real tear jerker... every bit as good as Let me Down Easy...

Yep, it's on a Kent compilation of Atlantic deep soul called "Our Turn To Cry".
Also look out for a Bettye Lavette compilation called "Souvenirs". It has most of her big tunes on.
Ms.Lavette herself is an active member of the Southern Soul forum on Yahoo. It seems to be a forum for artists, DJs, record shop owners et al. I made a few posts as a casual fan and was more or less ignored. Great read though. Just look up Southern Soul on Yahoo Groups.

James - welcome and thanks for your response. We must do that trade we nearly set up about 100 years ago.
Gordy - If you fit the description of 'casual' soul music fan then I need a new dictionary. Thanks for your response too and all the others on this thread.

Yes Baldy...if Gordy's a "casual" fan, the rest of us might as well all pack up and go home

I only have this on 7", an excellent soul number - remember where i was when i first heard it - if there's an album like this, I'd like to know: Motown 1532 - Right In The Middle (Of Falling In Love) / You Seen One You Seen 'Em All - 1982

Bettye Lavette's 1981/2 album on Motown is well worth seeking for. One of the 80's best soul albums by any measure.
