...the influence the recently-departed Link Wray apparently had on many rock guitarists must put him up there among the greats. Chuck Berry also laid a few guitar-based foundations for others to follow I understand Joe Brown has influenced a few more recent axe men too

For sheer versatility, chiaroscuro and lyricism not to mention continuing creativity I'ld go for Richard Thompson.

I will agree with Grumpy and say Richard Thompson. I saw him play live a couple of weeks ago, just him and Danny Thompson on double bass - what a great show. He is one helluva guitar player!!

Jimi is the wildest and most exciting of all time.
For big riffs in rockstone fashion: Malcolm Young.
Furious thrashing: Johnny Ramone

I doubt there is a single better riff than 'Whole Lotta Love' so that has to count for something in my book. I was just listening to it last night. It's funny but I never had any time for Zeppelin as a youngster but these days I really appreciate their stuff. High octane blues with some jazz tinges. dubminister

I find that Zeppelin has been tainted with the "heavy metal" brush for far too long. In my opinion, it's crazy that the Who (in their brief prime and awesome band) is salivated over by critics, while Led Zeppelin is given the short end of the stick.
And one thing they did that will forever be appreciated - they split up at the right time! No tainted legacy here.
Other than "Stairway to Heaven", they were one of the all-time great bands.

Hendrix without a doubt, I could go into why, but I havn't got time, I also rate / Stevie Vai, Joe Satriani, Fast Eddie, Dime Bag, Angus Young, Jimmy Page (in the good ole days), Chaz Jankel, Wilko Johnson, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Howe, Bobbie Kreiger, Steve Hillage, Todd Rundgren... blah blah blah...
Overrated guitarits for me would include, - Jeff beck, Eric Clapton, Al Dimeola, Frank Zappa (Though I like his playing), Slash

Of course, take rock out of the equation and you're left with Diblo Dibala - hands down greatest guitar player of all time. Makes all the pretenders sound like they're playing with oven gloves on!

I always thought that the drum solo on Paralysed sounded like they set up the kit at the top of a flight of stairs and recorded the sound of them as they were kicked down the stairs.
