I assume you are referring to the Congolese axeman rather than el Caudillo de Espana there, Hugh. Alarming theology otherwise.

Franco's stupendous Attention Na Sida - all 16 mins of it - from 1987 is the climax to this week's Blowin, Sundays 8-10pm UK time, 96.7fm in Bradford and Leeds, www.bcb.yorks.com for web listeners. Both Azda and Attention Na Sida are on Franco - The Rumba Giant Of Zaire, a bargain price release on Manteca. The sleevenotes to this mention a 'definitive 4 CD box set on Sterns Africa' - anyone know this? any good? Rob

Rob, the current (ie March/April) issue of Songlines contains a Beginners Guide to Franco. In the concluding paragraph, Martin Sinnock writes:
"At one point there were plans for Stern's Africa to release a four CD definitive compilation which would have authoritatively covered Franco's career. Sadly the demise of the Sonodisc label prevented the licensing of the recordings".
That rather suggests the project is dead in the water.
In lieu of that, Sinnock recommends these releases (oddly, four of them are on the defunct Sonodisc label):
1. The Rough Guide to Franco (World Music Network, 2001) 2. Franco et L'OK Jazz 1966-1968 (Sonodisc, 1992) 3. Franco & le T.P.O.K. Jazz, 1972/1973/1974 (Sonodisc, 1993). Apparently this is a compilation of two complete LPs ("Azda", the one Bedward mentioned above, and "Mabele") 4. Franco & son T.P.O.K. Jazz, 3ieme Anniversaire de la Mort du Grand Maitre Yorgho (Sonodisc, 1993) 5. Grand Maitre Franco et Seigneur Rochereau, Lettre a Monsieur le Directeur General (Sonodisc, 1994)
