Ok now for my review Ege Bamyasi was my favourite to listen to all the way through but I still have a soft spot for "Halleluhwah" from Tago Mago but the album goes too "hippie stupid" on tracks 5&6, but I suppose it's not the 70's any more and a long time since I did mushrooms C.D

Daisy - Can was mostly comprised of guys who weren't officially trained in music that made experimental tripped out rhythmic music, which was often times extended improvisations that were edited down for album lengths and individual songs - Future Days is the best example of this approach. It's a different approach, but I would tend to think that people who can appreciate the dreamy instrumentation of dub who are open to rock music would dig Can's Future Days.

My all-time favorite "rock" band. I just pressed up a limited-edition LP (500 copies) called "Hollywood" of highlights from a gig I did with former Can vocalist Damo Suzuki at the Knitting Factory, L.A. 2002. I played drums,. Also involved were members of the groups Farflung, Anubian Lights, Seksu Roba and Mandog. All tracks (and more) are also available on a 2CD set called "Hollyaris."

That's great Richter!
Thanks a lot, now I've seen Liebezeit at work I'm even more impressed - lad must have had a stiff neck after all that checking on his bandmates, whilst drumming in a really tight and controlled style. And, although i know zilch about german rock bands, would it be too great a leap to call the late Michael Karoli the german Jerry Garcia?
Any more where that came from?
cheers Rob

From what I've heard, Beat Club was some show in Germany that aired a bunch of live performances of bands from the 60's and 70's. I guess a lot of the tapes have survived over the years, because a lot of Beat Club DVDs have been released. They're mostly of interest to fans of UK psychedelia - because a lot of obscure bands played on this show. Don't have any more info than that - a friend shared the link with me, so I thought I'd share it with you on this board.

The Can DVD is essential, and I'm not just saying that `cuz they're damn near a religion with me! The documentary is incredible - if you think the Beat Club snippet is great, wait `til you see the B&W footage of them banging out some unknown improvisation in the studio w/ Damo cooing about "it's raining" or something like that - wild! The very long "Can Free Concert" film also included is, as CD says, "scary but wonderful," Can at their most dark and primal, with a brief intermission during which jugglers and acrobats do their thing acccompanied by a musical saw player! The videos for the techno remixes are even more of a snooze than the mixes themselves, but the whole thing is still very much a bargain. It was originally sold as part of a box set with 2 live CDs and a book.

Actually, an abridged version was sold with the box, the newer version has a documentary focussing on the members' post-Can projects as well as the reunion and remix stuff.

Also used to be into early Scorpions and Ashra Temple (two name to other great German groups) Listening to Can makes me recall listening to Gong, Hawkwind, Inner City unit, Spirit, Tangerine Dream, Steve Hillage and all that good 'Head' music.... I met Steve Hillage a couple of times about 5 years ago... Man, he is crazy! He locked himself and us out of his apartment block then went nuts running up and down the street banging his head off lampposts and stuff until we suggested the builders might let us in... "Oh... Yeah man" says he.

Thanks for that clip. I haven't been listening to Can for a number of years, but it seems that I should... i had some of their records on tape and I had Monster Movie on LP, but I was stupid enough to sell it. There is an hungarian band called Vagtazo Halottkemek that sometimes reminds me of Can at their most primal. Somehow they popped to my mind too after a long while...
