Recently managed to get a mint copy of Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil on vinyl. This is a masterpiece of 70s feel good brasillia. Can anyone recommend any other essentials. I'm also awaiting the arrival of the following based on recommendation. Has anyone heard this?
Zito Righi e seu conjunto - Alucinolandia
Also, is the strut release by DJ Cliffy - Black Rio worth hunting down?

The 'DJ Cliffy presents Black Rio' compilation is excellent.
Another great collection is Brazilica 2 compiled by Giles Peterson. (Volume 1 is good too).

Thanks, I'll add them to the long list, although I've struggled to find a copy of black rio anywhere.
It's taken me several months to find a copy of the other highly regarded strut compilation nigeria 70. I hope it was worth the hunt and the inflated price once it arrives!

The collections on Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label, are obligatory for the best Brazilian music, although not really the darker, funky style of Jorge Ben.... Any Tropicalia comp should have enough to make your day if you like it psychedelic...SoulJazz had a comp in the pipeline..is it out?? Luv n'Haight in the US was putting out some nice Bra jazz/funky sides from the 70s.... Needless to say the first three Mutantes albums are great, Gal Costa was lovely back in the heyday, but you gotta be picky with the vinyl. Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento have all released works of genius, and the odd duffer too! I like some Forro (folk dance music from Bahia), although it's not to everyone's taste....a good Forro dance in Brazil is a sight to behold though. Tudo Bem... El Pilote

I also recommend the Tropicalia era (68-71) Os Mutantes, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil albums. The Black Rio compilation on Strut is amazing. Over the years, I've mustered the motivation and willingness to track down and buy releases from some of the bands that were featured on the Black Rio compilation. Of these, the Orlandivo - Orlandivo album is a gem and is available as a CD reissue. The debut album by Banda Black Rio is also available on CD and is highly recommended. A guy I met made me a mix CDR of post Tropicalia Brazilian soul and pop which made a big impression on me. All sourced from vinyl. This ended up getting me to search around on the Dusty Groove mailorder site, and it turns out a lot of the stuff on this CDR has been reissued on CD. Of these, I really highly recommend Marcos Valle - Previsao Do Tempo, Joao Donato - Quem A Quem, Lo Borges - Lo Borges, Clube Da Esquina, Clube Da Esquina 2, Di Melo - Di Melo, Quarteto Em Cy - Quarteto Em Cy... All these are great if you love warm production, lots of melodies, beautiful vocals, and some funky upbeat Brazilian sounds. In addition to discovering more sweet 70's dub, roots reggae, and early 80's dancehall last year, this was my favorite stuff that I found. One of my friends asked me to sub a show for her at our radio station, and the first forty or so minutes of the show I played some of the stuff that I mentioned above. Here's a link that you can use to download that show so that you can hear some of this stuff... High-Bit MP3 download

Oh, and if you're interested in checking out some multi artist compilations that feature some of the stuff that I mentioned above, I really recommend the Selacao Soul and Soul Of Brazil CDs. A lot of this stuff has been reissued on the EMI Odeon label as imports.
The only place that I've seen that stocks these for reasonable prices or stocks them at all is Dusty Groove.

A recent Brazilian artist I really like is Paula Lima - lovely old-skool funk sound to some of her stuff. I think it would work well on ears that haven't really heard much Brazilian music. Speaking of old skool funk, here's Paula with her dog 'Rufus' named after Rufus And Chaka Khan - who IMO made some of the greatest records ever! Now to the albums 'Diva Paulista' from Mr.Bongo which is more of a collection with a couple of remixes: .... and the two homegrown releases:

I love the first "Timbalada" cd - the one with the breasts on the cover. Great stuff - perfect for a Carnival party.

If you like the Di Melo, you'll probably love the Marcos Valle Previsao Do Tempo even more!
