Wonderful new LP called The Greatest. Recorded at Memphis, TN's Ardent Studios over the summer by Stuart Sikes, 'The Greatest' while the most confident and life-affirming work of Chan Marshall's career, is as intensely personal, haunting and provocative as any of its predecessors. The album's players are a bona fide All-Star team of Memphis musicians, including Al Green sideman Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy "Flick" Hodges and David Smith on bass, Rick Steff on keys, Jim Spake on sax and trumpteer Scott Thompson amongst others. Have to disagree with you on this one Bedward - the record company were so keen to push this one they sent me a promo and a finished copy, so I've heard it. Great voice, and a great idea to team up with some of Memphis finest, but I can't really see the attraction- don't think the songs are very strong, and the whole is somewhat less than the sum of its parts. Maybe I should listen to it again - the monthly glossy music comics have taken it to their hearts, with glowing lead reviews. Can you all be right, while I'm wrong?! maybe..

Gotta say i agree with Rob on this. A great idea, but the weakness of (some) of the songs doesnt match up to the musicianship - I'd give it a 6/10
I think its interesting to note that out of all her albums the one that is generally considered her best is entirely made up of other peoples songs - The Covers Record

Agree to disagree...I have the same problem with convincing people of the strengths of Everything but the Girl or the Smiths.
I definitely prefer the You Are Free LP to the Covers record

I have to agree and disagree - I think! I think the new one is The Greatest "Could We" is a classic already (in my room anyway). Great record all the way through! On the other hand I think "The Covers Record" far superior to "You Are Free" - didn't really get into that one much at all. "Wild Is The Wind" and "Red Apples" - two of the best covers ever made - her voice kills me on these! Phew!

Edward, what about her first album " What would the community think", has at least the great "Nude As The News" (don't remember the rest).

Ekki, I don't know that album. I didn't know about her until "The Covers Record" came out. I will investigate her back catalogue slowly. Meanwhile, I expect an answer soon from that Zoki fellow along the lines of "I will investigate her back passage slowly!"

Don't know if they're out of print or how rare they are, but I do have the debut Cat Power 10" (I think it's called Dear Sir... or something like that) and an early Cat Power 7" in which she covers a Thurston Moore song (of Sonic Youth).
I expect that I'll warm up to Greatest once I let it soak in.
I was a little disappointed with Moon Pix when I first heard it, but I think that's definitely my favorite album that she's done so far...
