Are Dilated Peoples still going?
I liked their albums The Platform and Expansion Team.
Also love Jurassic 5 (just got Chali 2 Na's solo album).
I love hip hop as long as it's got that old school fun vibe to it and it ain't all gangsta shite.
Respect

Jurassic 5 are mighty, DJ Format's records have that old school thing but I love Dr Dre productions, slackness and all.

In case anyone is going to do a search - just thought I'd mention that it should be 'Edan'. There's so much good stuff out there from recent times that I think I shall bother this thread some more a little later. Y'all know the way you say 'reggae' to an unsuspecting casual music listener and they say 'Bob Marley' .... ....well with Hip Hop it's much more worrying .... they'll probably think of 50 Cent or 2Pac.

Have you guys seen Scratch (the hip hop DJ documentary)? I'd say that it's my favorite music documentary that I've ever seen, and I respect the art form much much more after having viewed the DVD.

Hiphop was the first music I fell in love with so I've been listening to it a whole lot actually. But I'm more stuck on the late 80's vibe than the new stuff. One of the few groups that always check out is The Coup!
They're political, funky, intellectual and just cool like hiphop should be!

With all these sections, this topic almost went by unnoticed by me. I love recent (and not recent) hip hop. Some artists / groups that I play frequently: Blackalicious, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Afu-Ra, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Pete Philly & Perquisite (from the Netherlands, wicked first album out!), Arsonists. Great music I tell ya!

Freddy - not really got much time for hip hop after mid 90s to be honest. For any "old skool" fans here, Tommy Boy Records are 2/3rds of the way through a major overview of hip hop from 1979-1991. The albums are called Hip Hop Essentials Volume 1-12. I have just acquired Vols 1-4, am awaiting delivery of Vols 5-8 and Vols 9-12 will be released in March. Artists include Public Enemy, De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, A tribe Called Quest, Kurtis Blow etc. This months issue of Record Collector has a big 5 star review of these albums - here is a link to the official website - www.hiphopessentials.netTruly recommended

My first post, following a migration from the blood and fire forum ;D
I've recently re-discovered Three Foot High and Rising by De La Soul. Wow, this is still so so fresh. What is their other stuff like?
I must admit I've bought a lot of hip hop in the past and I'm often left disappointed. I cannot get into any of the madlib, victor vaughan, dangerdoom stuff. The recent stuff I have liked has been
Cannibal OX - Cold Vein, GhostFace Killah - Supreme Clientelle, el-p, anti-pop consortium and anything by buck 65. The illegal download of the grey album by dangermouse (Jay Z black album remix) is quite good.

quoting Gordy: "Are Dilated Peoples still going?I liked their albums The Platform and Expansion Team". Their new album " 20/20" is dropping next week in the US. Capleton's on it - Firepower (The Tables Have To Turn) feat. Capletonwww.undergroundhiphop.com/...."Dilated Peoples, are getting ready to gear up for a full North American tour/assault on your senses and getting serious TV love in the process. Carson Daly, while not stuffing his face with choch, throws down with Dilated on his late night show. The lead single “Back Again” is getting major west coast radio play and a video with all types of west coast cameos just got shot for it. All this is gearing up for “20/20.” Dilated really went for broke on this one, coming with their hardest hitting beats to date and really seeming to be as focused as ever. You know you need to check this; your friends who don’t even listen to hip-hop will be telling you about it if you don’t. God they’ve come along way since “Third Degree” back in 97 on a then fledgling ABB."

quoting Gryffe: "i would recommend the madvillainy album to you freddy - easily the best hip hop album in recent memory"Agreed - I just reckoned that the more mainstream of the music press have probably all reviewed it - looking at your web link, I think that is the case. MF Doom is getting lots of coverage now - even a cover on WIRE magazine last year. Here's a discography of his stuff from Peanut Butter Wolf's site: stonesthrow.com/madvillain/mfdoom-discography.htmlPlenty I don't have there. I bought that 3rd Base album that he first appeared on way back when it came out but didn't get KMD's debut "Mr. Hood" until maybe 3 or 4 years after it came out. Then I was hooked and started buying his 12" releases on Bobbito's Foldle'Em label whenever I could. One artist I would probably collect everything by - but he's prolific now and I hardly keep up. He's really collectible now, too and there are loads of rarities and bootlegs which I usually miss. Kinda nice that he was born in London (later moving to the US)and has Caribbean and South African heritage. I just found out recently that another US based MC I like called Jean Grae (formerly known as What What and originally from South Africa) is the daughter of Abdullah Ibrahim of "Dollar Brand" fame!

For some reason I've never heard that Edan album or the one before it "Primitive Plus", which really blew up for him. I have an older mix album by him though which mixs a lot of old skool tracks, called "Fast Rap". Yeah, like the Infinite Livez too.

not too much, no, apart from a few UK acts once in a while. while digging in my closet a found an early 90's album by a guy called Laquan, from California. it is absolutely tremendous musically speaking, great rapper too, though some nation of 5 % creeps in, which may not be everyone's cuppa.

I remember that name and the track "Now's The B Turn" just don't remember what is sounded like. I found the album listed here and it's not too expensive. tinyurl.com/d3exySpeaking of five percenters, I'm pretty keen on the Poor Righteous Teachers. I even picked up Wise Intelligent's solo album.

yes, i really enjoy one PRT album, but their message is somehow less articulate than Laquan's. his album is very musical, very jazzy, with very powerful beats, not unlike the great Sons of Bazerk, no idea what they became but that is another of my fave hip hop albums.nothing new, eh!
