This is the first in a series of real rare foundation sessions that Andrew Lee of Small Axe fame has kindly asked me to try to restore as much as I can and then share with you... Andrew like me has been in the sound tape game for years now, is very knowledgable about foundation sound system business and has some very rare cassettes.
A lot of these old tapes are taped live in the dance, on I'm guessing pretty basic tape recorders, so the quality isn't going to be fantastic on some, I am working as hard as I can to clean them up...
The first one out of the box is: Papa Roots Hi Fi Live at The Barn, Brentford rd,
Kingston 1981...
Featuring: Ranking Trevor, Nicodemus, Dillinger, Lui Lepke, Jah Mikey, Jah Benji
This is a small piece written by Andrew about Papa Roots....
"Papa Roots Hi-Fi was the fouth name of a sound system which originally started out as Soul Attorney in the early 70's, then changing to King Attorney in the mid seventies. It's name changed again when ghetto don Tony Welch bought the set in early 1978 and renamed it Socialist Roots. There is a Socialist Roots session dated May 1978 in which U.Brown mentions quite a few times that S.Roots is the new name for K.A. It had strong links with the Jamaican Peoples National Party. Regular deejays on the set included Ranking Trevor, U Brown, Jah Benjie, Jah Mikey and Nicodemus alongside the regular selector Danny Dread. The set then became known as Papa Roots Hi-Fi in the early 80's. The son of the original owner now runs a soundclash set based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada which is called King Attarney."
Big shouts must go out to Stephen, Ray, Dave, T, Vincent and Rufus
Please enjoy it here:
