One to catch if you can, but I wonder quite how commercial Carlos will be sounding now. he always had a more commercial less raw sound (at least according to what I've heard) I really like the big band sound of people like Carlos Malcolm.. Though I really only know that sort of vibe via the Jamaican Gold cds.

He'll sound huge - the MSO is basically the collected horns of various Melbourne Bands. I saw them play with Owen Gray singing out front and it was a powerful thing, real vibes. It is billed as "A short history of reggae" here's the promo blurb: "A performance by the Melbourne Ska Orchestra is no mere gig - it's an event, a landmark, a roaring Ska/Reggae summit of biblical proportions. The MSO is made up of a veritable who's who of local Jazz, Funk, and Ska talent led by ARIA award winning maestro, Nicky Bomba. They play rarely and always to packed houses. The Melbourne Ska Orchestra has become a Melbourne music institution. On Friday 24 February at the Prince Bandroom, the Melbourne Ska Orchestra will be joined by a very special guest - legendary Jamaican trombonist and bandleader Carlos Malcolm to deliver "A Short History of Reggae". Carlos Malcolm has been part of the Jamaican music scene since the 1950s. Carlos Malcolm and the Afro-Jamaican Rhythms, vied with the Skatalites and Byron Lee as the most popular band of the Ska era. He had top ten hits in Jamaica with "Rukumbine" (1963) and "Bonanza" (1964). He also wrote the incidental music to the first James Bond film, Dr. No and currently leads the Jamaican National Orchestra. "A Short History of Reggae" will be a joyful and jumping celebration of Jamaican music from its Mento beginnings into Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. Expect to hear off-beat anthems by the likes of Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, the Skatalites, Bob Marley and Carlos Malcom himself - all blasted out by an impenetrable 30-strong wall of musical sound. Guests: PAUL WILLIAMSON * KYLIE AULDIST * BEN PETERS * THE ALTONIANS (vocal group feat. Simon Burke, Sim Martin) * HIPSTER GO-GO DANCERS * DJ MOHAIR SLIM * DJ OLD-SKOOL ANDY (Adelaide) + more. As is MSO tradition, the men are requested to dress sharp and the ladies glamorous ; with a VIP back-stage pass for best-dressed rude boy and rude girl! Presented by Red Stripe and PBS FM Carlos Malcolm & The Melbourne Ska Orchestra Friday 24 February 2006 Prince Bandroom, 29 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda 9.30 pm Start Tickets $28 + b.f.: Polyester Records (Fitzroy 9419-5137) Missing Link Records (City 9670-8208) Greville Records (Prahran 9531-0132) Prince of Wales public bar (9536-1177), Phone-Charge (9536-1168) and online at www.princebandroom.com.au "
