To be held at a venue to be confirmed (read booked!) in London in November this year.
I'm mentioning this now as I need a hand with it. Fiver to get in, all funds raised go to Kenn's kids for their Christmas as before.
Someone please find a suitable central venue and let's get the ball rolling on this please.

Great G, I was going to have a chat with you about this at MIU, I've been talking to Debbie recently who was feeling a little sad that nothing like a memorial, or dedicated thang had happned anywhere, we'll chat about this at MIU and afterwards if that's cool, I'll have this website Ian and I are doing done by then hopefully. I'll also be pulling Zap to one side if I get the chance at MIU, so watchout, there's a bmd about..

Nice one Mikey!
You can re-assure Debbie that there's a few of us who haven't forgotten and think of Charlie quite often still. It'd be nice to get a big name DJ to offer his services. Plenty of us are more than competent selectors but a well known DJ would put maybe another 30 or 40 people on the door at least.

That would be great Mr. Reel.
It's difficult to guage how large (or small) a capacity would be right for the night.
I have no idea what kind of capacity would be realistic, any ideas? I'd like to think it might pull a crowd say half the size of a good Tighten Up evening...? What say you?
What kind of deals are available with Landlord's in L'don? It's a long time since I tried organnising anything at all like this, and previously I was putting small festivals and days on at Country pubs and venue's a lot different than London obviously.
Also, would you suggest a particular night of the week? Weekend is for obvious reason highly desirable, and i think neccesary to get a good crew along, but this too may be a problem, in so much as convincing a venue of the night's saleability, may be more difficult on a night they normally pull a few sponds in?
Cheers for the offer Mr. Reel..

It's definitely got to be on a Friday or Saturday, I was hoping for an all dayer say 2pm to midnight? Or if we can find somewhere with a 2am finish then say 6pm through til 2? It gives the different DJs enough time to do their thing.
I'm looking at a realistic crowd of around 100 to 150. 200+ would be nice.

Sustaining a whole leap of people for that long isnt easy G. We'd need a fair bit of organising to make that one go off with a bang.

What a nice idea!
Unless you have money to risk though - you'll probably want a slot that is not Friday or Saturday night.
I would guess that the fact that it is a fundraiser for Charlie Reggae's family will draw some people that might not normally go out midweek.
And my experience is that venues which are free throughout the week ask for a fat deposit on Friday or Saturday night which they only give back is you get a certain number of people or if the bar take is a given amount.
If you do go for midweek I would recommend Lowdown at the Albany where I used to promote MIU!. Certainly at that time it was free during the week, 2am finish, West End location, cosy basement bar with booths, drinks at pub prices, lovely sound system for a small room (3k I think). It has a new manager since then but the same owner I think.
The hot venue in Hackney under Ryan's Bar though is free all the time including weekends (again - capacity around 100) but an early (midnight) finish. I can certainly talk to you more about it at miu!

baldy ps - if you go for an all-dayer - sunday might be good.

I'll send you the details when I get back to my templates at work on Monday Mikey. My apologies for the oversight.
In terms of a venue for the Charlie Reggae dance - did he live in or hail from/near London I wonder? It'll be a LOT easier to promote if friends and family can get there easily.

Hi John,.. Thanks,... No he hailed originally from Somerset, and then lived before finally moving to Wantage in Oxfordshire in Haverhill, Suffolk. Anyone likely to come to a night in London will make the required effort I'm sure, there won't be that many amongst family. However it would certainly be worth me sounding Debbie out about family and friends etc etc. Did you yet receive my MP3? I sent it to the two e-mail addreses you suggested. If you havn't received it, then something is going wonky

Lowdown at the Albany is a nice venue indeed - I'm guessing this downstairs bar was where the food / wine / beer was kept many years ago - I liked the seating alcoves. Perhaps a Thursday night would be best - taking the Friday off would be make for an extended week-end. Regarding deposits - if 8-10 of us chipped in towards a (say) £250-£300 deposit, that would spread the risk - you could count me in for a share (unless my financial situation takes any more of a downtown!!! ;D) - if I got my money back fine, if not, wel it's all in a good cause. I have no idea about venues in London... I'll be happy to chew the fat on this on Saturday...

Thats just it though Zap - there is no deposit required there on a Thursday (or never used to be anyway). But Friday or Saturday they require a deposit - used to be £200

BMD, Gordon, Penny or anyone else. I'm thinking I could try schedule another MIU! in (probably the second half of) October and that this could be a handy opportunity for publicising the Charlie Reggae memorial if it goes ahead in November as planned.
Does this sound like a good plan to you? Your feedback will be welcome as ever.

Sounds like an excellent idea mate. Of course with Charlie's Memorial dance, the main thing will be to try and get some of his old mates there first and foremost, but everyone's welcome as long as we get a mic and let people know why they're all there. Also, as it's a memorial for Charlie, there will be an abundance of ska and skinhead reggae on the musical menu.

I'm only asking because it 'seems' like despite a lot of goodwill, there may not be anyone taking a clear lead in making it happen in any of its aspects.
I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd love to come along as punters (if someone else organises it) - and I'm sure you'll not be short of DJs (if someone else organises it) - but booking the venue is the essential first step - hence my question. Once the venue is booked you can get on with promoting the night and booking DJs etc. But if nobody takes the first step and books a venue, it won't happen.
I'm sure that this would be a good forum through which you could find out about London venues (assuming its London you want) if you wanted to take up the reins G. I know a few and I'm sure the same is true of Augui, Jean-Paul, TimP, Jugz, Stephen Taw and there are probably others here too. Just say the word if you want the little venue booking info that I have. Perhaps a new thread on the subject would yield something useful.
Respect
