Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dominic Behan was the brother of Brendan Behan ? I know little of Irish history/politics but this is my favourite lyric off all time
In Manhattan's desert twilight In the death of afternoon We stepped hand in hand on Broadway Like the first man on the moon
And "The Blackbird" broke the silence As you whistled it so sweet And in Brendan Behan's footsteps I danced up and down the street
Then we said goodnight to Broadway Giving it our best regards Tipped our hats to Mister Cohan Dear old Times Square's favorite bard
Then we raised a glass to JFK And a dozen more besides When I got back to my empty room I suppose I must have cried
....and definately my tune of the day

yes he was taff. and their father stephen was an active member of the ira back when irishmen were not afraid to stand up to the brits, and didnt roll over to be tickled on the tummy and be rewarded with a puppet state like the stickie scum who sold out the rest of the island with their "im ok,stuff the rest of you" attitude which still festers to this day. stephen refused to swear allegiance to the british crown after the civil war.
back to the pogues, i much prefer this lyric
McCormack and Richard Tauber are singing by the bed There's a glass of punch below your feet and an angel at your head There's devils on each side of you with bottles in their hands You need one more drop of poison and you'll dream of foreign lands
When you pissed yourself in Frankfurt and got syph down in Cologne And you heard the rattling death trains as you lay there all alone Frank Ryan brought you whiskey in a brothel in Madrid And you decked some f***ing blackshirt who was cursing all the Yids At the sick bed of Cuchulainn we'll kneel and say a prayer And the ghosts are rattling at the door and the devil's in the chair
And in the Euston Tavern you screamed it was your shout But they wouldn't give you service so you kicked the windows out They took you out into the street and kicked you in the brains So you walked back in through a bolted door and did it all again At the sick bed of Cuchulainn we'll kneel and say a prayer And the ghosts are rattling at the door and the devil's in the chair
You remember that foul evening when you heard the banshees howl There was lazy drunken bastards singing Billy is in the bowl They took you up to midnight mass and left you in the lurch So you dropped a button in the plate and spewed up in the church
Now you'll sing a song of liberty for blacks and paks and jocks And they'll take you from this dump you're in and stick you in a box Then they'll take you to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground But you'll stick your head back out and shout "we'll have another round" At the graveside of Cuchulainn we'll kneel around and pray And God is in His heaven, and Billy's down by the bay

Yes,great song that,it's virtually impossible to pick a favourite as MacGowan is a genius of the highest order but there's something about that part of Thousands Are Sailing that puts a lump in my throat no matter how many times I hear it.

"Kawa" by Orchestre Los Angel (track on Volume 21 of the African Serenades series, selected by the estimable JayB). Gloriously clear and crisp singing and instrumentation for a gloriously clear and crisp winter's morning. All hail the impeccable taste of the manlike John Braybrooks. Season's greetings to you and yours, John.

Sounds good, Chris.
Eager to remind myself of what this particular tune sounds like, I popped the disc into the player only to find that there's no music burnt onto it! I have the cover and the disc has "vol 21" on it, but it's an otherwise blank disc. Perhaps even stranger is why it took me so long to realise!
Could you possibly copy this one for me in the new year?
Best of the season to you,
Melvyn

No problem, Melvyn. I'll get that run off for you. I realised almost straight away back in 2006 that John's original disc was a tad dodgy so quickly did myself a good copy which I thought I had used as my master but it seems clearly not on all occasions. This volume of the series is certainly something to look forward to in the new year, for which best wishes and a Happy Christmas in the meantime.

Nice one MMMM-Mike.
My fave tune is one for our Scottish friend (check the bagpipe sample):
It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll) - AC/DC
Or as they sing in Oz:
It's a Long Way to the Shop (If You Wanna Chiko Roll)
